  • Old Jeep now toy , going to slowly make it more usefull .

Ive been rock crawling for the last 7 years now and offroading since I bought my first truck when I was 13 . Heres my toy , a 62cj5 , f134 , t90 3 speed , dana 30 , dana 44 5.38 gearing locked front and back mostly standard fair for older cj5s .

It does fine on the trail no real complaints about the old girl there . But on the road is a different ball game . The jeep would make a great scout , hunting and wood gathering utility vehicle but its a hand full to go any distance running faster than 35 mph . So whats the plan .

Im going to pull the tired 4 banger out , drop in a 4.3 chevy v6 TBI , sm420 4 speed , warn over drive , full cage , full float the rear .

What will I gain , 2 times the ponies under the hood , easy starting and no ill effects of angle with the throttle body , a low first gear of 7 to 1 , a 1.25 overdrive and better road manners .

Ive already have swapped out the steering from ross to saginaw when I swapped out the dana 27 closed nuckle front end with a dana 30 front end which gave me a smaller turning radius and better steering system along with the ability to had power steering when I do the engine swap .

    Front end swap

Started the wiring for the engine swap , I have the harness built for the engine , relay blocks for the lights and starting on the switch and gauge panels so when I get around to the swap its self Ill have every thing ready .

    Switch panel

Well thats a few notes on it so far.

As a long time Jeep owner (Renegade/Wrangler), I've never been a gear head :-( But it sure is nice to see people keeping those things going.

I notice in your first few pictures, it doesn't appear you are worried about flipping the Jeep (no harness). Good luck with the changes.

You are right , there is no seat beat at all on the drivers side and the roll bar might help in a lay over but in a end over its not going to help , I built it when I didnt care much for living .On the trail I get called a crazy SOB at lest a couple times a day. When Version 2.0 is done as I call it ,it will have a cage and proper harnesses .

and why its time for the old F134 to come out , we figure she now down to under 40 hp to the rear . So the tire rubbing the frame makes the difference between it staying running or not . Note the guy saying its retarded at the 15 sec mark , thats because we were there for 2 hours repairing a blazer on the trail there and in that time no one made the line I ran . The first pic in the first post is the side view of this video , neither do the angles proper .
