  • Parts are coming together.

About a year back, I was doing some reading on some various preparedness and survival boards, and I got on the subject of bicycles as transportation for hard times and other events where you might not have automotive transportation.

So I researched the subject of bicycles and bicycle trailers for transporting cargo to and fro. I found some really great information, sites with tips and DIY infoand videos, etc, etc,. I picked a real good design found here http://www.re-cycle.org/trailer (TRAILER #1), and started looking around for parts to start building one.

I saw a few bikes and some various junk parts and what-not as time went by, but never seemed to find enough "GOOD" things to fill the bill of what I was looking for.
Then one day, I found some lightweight channel steel that I thought might make a good framework for the bed. a bit of scrap here and there, etc, etc, but never any bike frame pieces and wheels, because the local junk scavangers usually beat me to that sort of stuff.

That was until last week....... :D

I was on my way to my cousin's house to cut his lawn, and I go by a route that takes me through the back country between his home and mine. As I made a turn onto this one particular road, I passed the home of the father of a girl that I went to high school with, and saw a good size collection of bicycles that he was throwing out to the trash. It was on the opposite side of the road, so I drove a bit further up the road to an access drive to a piece of land just recently purchased by the local county park district, and turned around to go back and load them up before one of the local junkers happened along.

It yielded a couple of old 10 speed bikes that looked to be about 70's vintage, aboys 20" BMX style, and a couple of tiny childrens, first bikes. I stripped them down this past week, and took the rest of what I didn't need to the scrap yard to recycle with some other srap metal I had, ad make a bit of extra cash tor the trouble of just picking it up and loading it on the truck.

I believe I now have enough to start, and hope to do a build post about it soon, so keep watching here in the forum for it.

My plan has recently added bikes as a possible way out of the city (where I work) to the country (where I live). I've even heard of rail adapter things to put your bike on train tracks. Check it out, it might be a good idea.
