I live in Md which has some strict gun laws and the best way to keep this is either fork out the cash and get a 2 drawer system that allows you to keep weapons in one drawer and ammo and mags ( not loaded ) in the other locked box or you can hit a store that sells truck boxes and slap that in the back . You will want to bolt either of these down in case of accident . Make sure they are locked at all times . If you are pulled over and they are locked and stored correctly , there should be no issues . They CAN NOT open them if they are locked without a warrant and refusing to let them search your car is not suspicion enough to warrant a search . I have lock boxes in all my vehicles and I store my weapons legally , it will take a minute or so to get my weapons on line , but Im in accordance with the law , so I dont have to worry about that , just hoping that for whatever reason I need my weapons can wait the 45 seconds or it takes to lock and load . I do keep speed loaders and come cammenga mags to help with the loading . I do practice throwing the truck in park , unlocking box and loading mags . I can have 2 mags loaded and ready to rock in my AR in about 45 sex and another 30 sex or so to load the ultra carry .45 .

Here in Florida firearms may be carried in a vehicle without a permit if they are "securely encased" i.e. handguns in the glovebox, or in a briefcase, etc. Long guns can get around the encased requirement if they "are not readily available to the driver."
My GMC pickup has a flip up rear seat covering an aftermarket storage bin that looks like part of the seat. This is where my long-gun-of-the-day resides. One 357 magnum in the console, one 357 magnum in the glove box.
My commuter vehicle is a Buick sedan, when I drive it the two handguns are in a briefcase on the passenger seat, the long gun is in the trunk.
All, of course, are fully loaded, except for the chamber on the long gun.
So, Andy, what you need to do first is check South carolina law and then go from there."There is nothing so exhilarating as to be shot at without result." Winston Churchill

This company has a drawer system for trucks, SUV's and cars, it is very cool. http://truckvault.com/ It will not work in my van, but I would like to have it installed in my husband's SUV.

If you have no other way to lock it. A cable wrapped around a seat mount and a padlock work very well and are inexpensive. This would work well with an idea like Bill's above (under a seat, etc)."The fact is that the average man's love of liberty is nine-tenths imaginary, exactly like his love of sense, justice and truth." ~ H.L. I have a hard sided locking gun case that I use a bicyle lock around and then the lock is secured to the rear seat bolts with a long shank padlock in '90 quad cab dakota. I can have the back seat down and it is out of site. It does take a bit to get the rifles out but it works.Survival question. What do I need most, right now?
