Sorry if this is threadjacking a bit, but there does seem to be quite a few Floridians on the boards here.

I am coming to the same conclusions as you monkeybird. I've been in the truck coming into the state with supplies during too many storms and have blazed past the parking lots since we were headed into the mess. I've been living in various parts of the state from Gainesville south for about 16 years now and my husband was born and raised in Tampa so we've witnessed a lot. Our present infrastructure just can not funnel people out of here. We used to be able to jump on 301 and head North and all you'd see was locals and big trucks, but now with GPS, everyone and their grandmother has figured out what was a nice little secret for locals. And it's not just the stated population we have to worry about - it's the tourists as well. Cluelessly out of their element.

Even though we don't have a boat right this minute (I'm still not done with my research), if something went down, I'd be headed to the sea shore. There are tons of boats that snowbirds leave bobbing out there and even more on consignment with brokers.
