an associate bought a tractor and asked for help transporting it..
so i loaded up binder, some chains and some straps.
as we were securing the tractor to the trailer a couple of "good ole boys" were politely watching and being a little nosey.
so, i commented "hey, i'm new at this. either of you know how to get this thing secured?"
they did know how and quickly stepped in. we had a pretty good distance to travel, and didn't want tractor bouncing off!
good ole boys main comment was my ratchet straps. they were 1 1/2 inch wide. and were a bright color. good ole boy let me know that these straps were not DOT approved and
if stopped i better get on my best behavior as the DOT were known to cite offenders.
we used chain in the front wtth a ?ratcheting? binder... i'm not sure of the proper name, but a handle is used to ratchet the binder to open/close. sort of like a top link on a 3 pt hitch system.
then used my improper straps on the rear.
these days, staying off the radar for any type law enforcement is a good idea. i have now bought 2" straps. in the process i realized that there are 2 sizes of 2 " straps. the thicker model was just a few dollars extra.
just pretend i am headed out of town because of a big emergency, giving the leos a reason to detain me would be a bad idea.
p.s. this story of "ratchet straps" brings back an old memory of an auction at a campground years ago.. somehow, the ratchet straps became the subject of a huge joke/laughter.
i don't remember why. a few members here were present... a tip of the hat to those that might remember the event. it was a good event.
