  • tractor failure..

since i live in a high rise condo... this is just a What IF!

what if ole keyboard kommando bought a tractor..
then he got a front end loader and was chest poking out proud at what a FEL could do...

then a storm came through and lots of trees were on the ground and nearly on the ground... and KK had to use a chain to drag off the trees..
then KK learned about a grapple and third funtion, so he got one! wow and yeee haahhh.. head and chest swole out with all KK could do with a grapple on his tractor.
    --
then Kk needed to order hisself some stuff and the vendor said, "we drop things off at the road. buyer is responsible for getting the things to his barn, house, worksho or other.
so KK went to delaer and paid too much for a frame and pallet forks.!! he drove right up to the road and stuck those pallet forks into the pallets and drove to his shop with the new delivery!

loader. grapple. forks, and other implements... Kk was just ready for anything with his tractor and capabilities !! ole kk thinking about getting some spray cans and making it cammo colored (not really)

anyhow time for the bottom line of this tale...

ole KK in the woods with his tractor and grapple.. on a slight grade. rear wheels spinning kk can't back up!!... ain't no problem to kk he's got loaded rear tires and fo wheel drive! kk
is looking around and can't find the problem. hill is not steep. oh sheet... front tire isn't spinning but the rim is.. tire is off the rim. tire is kind of wide. one of those r4 tires.

the thought runs through kk's thick head... that grapple/loader/pallet fork and other stuff ain't worth poop if the tractor won't run....
ole KK wasn't as prepped as he thought he was. period. just a pile of metal...

Seems like I spend more time fixing/improving and PM'ing my heavy equipment versus actually running it.

PLASTIC fuel tank on JD (maybe should be GD?) tractor had gunk in it, my question was how? It's plastic.

Was told it was my fuel cans. OK, may be. Drained and cleaned with acetone some of the cans, marked them.

As I'm draining the tank on the tractor, notice the crap isn't rust, more like algae. Off road but nothing "old".

Had to get fuel pump re-built. Those folks said "clean tank, use a sprayer and acetone, change all your filters, etc." I did all this and added a cheap inline fuel filter in addition to the JD/GD fuel/water separator filter. Ran for a while and as I bounced along in fields could see the crude accumulating in the in line filter, then before much longer it would lag and die. Pulled the inline filter, drained the tank again (more crude), replaced in line, more new fuel, drained some to be sure relatively clean and rolled on. Figured I would go through 2-3 of the inline filters but eventually all the crude would be caught.

6 or more inline filters later it's a lot cleaner. I decide to also change out the JD fuel/water filter. It's been changed recently but I bought two more. Changed that, including adding some fuel to it, etc.
Well evidently there is a o ring type seal at the top AND buried down in the filter a bit there is another one. Never messed with the inside o ring but evidently it was stuck sideways.

Tractor wouldn't fire. Repair guys narrowed it down to that and poor suction- hand pump primer had stopped working. Got to find another one.

Been sitting for a couple months, driveway to range looks like 'Nam grass is so high we watch for VC when we go over there.

Had that happen to me on my MF one year.
Turned out the place I bought the gas had a mix of ethenol and real gas.
glass filter from tank had a screen where the fuel came into the filter..
Very hard to see the crap but it was an algae scum that was really transparent but you could feel the slline with your finger.
Brushed it with alcohol and got the screen clear.
      reinstalled and worked great.
Second time around, I also dumped every thing in the fuel tank it before putting the tank filter/water trap back together.
      No problems after that.

We pulled the fuel filter primer pump assembly yesterday as problems still happened under load. The intake section of the assembly was about 1/2 way closed up with accumulated gunk. No wonder it would run "ok" without a load but then die under a load (PTO engaged).

Something no one thought to check previously.

          not a tractor, but relates...
jumped on mower as grass had gotten high... mower ran great. mower deck was noisier than previously. i checked a few times visually. couldn't see the reason.
i really needed to get the grass cut.
spindle/pulley done gone bad. belt broke..
friday afternoon. dealer closed for labor day.
          -----
btw, ole KK got the tire fixed. tire just jumped the rim, cut tire in a few places, but still holding air. asked the tire place to add a tube... not sure if that was a good idea or not. kk is going to increase tire pressure in the future. that may have contributed to event... low tire pressure and a heavy load on the FEL and sharp turn.
