  • Gas can question

I have been giving some serious thought for a while now on the subject of fuel storage. I'd like to get some of the metal "Jerry Cans" to keep for storage for my BOV.
I'm having trouble finding a supplier of these, so if anyone has some, please send along a link.

I'd like to get a few of them for gasoline, some for diesel, and some for kerosene.

I've also heard mention of some of them that are smaller ( about a gallon or two ), and would like to get some of these as well for storing parifin lamp oil. The original plastic bottles degrade over time, and can lead to a catastrophic failure, and loss of precious stored oil for emergency lighting.

You could always store your lamp oil in glass jars. I would assume some 1ltr. Whiskey bottles would do just fine.

I went to rotate my stored gasoline last summer and discovered that the spout that comes with the new cans are too short to fit into the tank!! It requires an extension nozzle (sold separately). Had the SHTF happened before a rotated the supply, I'd have been out of luck!

      Test you storage methods.

@monkeybird: couldn't your standard hose funnel work if the gascan nozzle is too short? :)

Also take a piece of garden hose slide it up high on the spout run some duct tape on it and make it as long as ya need it.

Anyone have issues with the cans rusting on the inside? I've got a few that are getting bad.

I had the same problem, the flex nozzle was to short to use on my Jeep. I had bought 4 cans and figured out that the flex nozzle hose tube thingy will slip over the end of another one extending the length. So I just carry it like that, works for me.

I buy mine from sportsmans guide and as long as they're kept full rust shouldn't be an issue. If they aren't full then rust will be the least of your concerns.

Major Surplus www.majorsurplus.com has new NATO style metal gas cans for sale in my newest flyer.its item number #08-3191.List weather you want 5, 10, or20 liter cans. What I do with the few USGI metal cans I have, is if they are not in use I put about 1/2 gallon of diesel or less in it and shake it up real good every so often. When I'm ready to fill up with gasoline, I dump the diesel in the work truck then rinse with some gas and use the "rinse" in the mower etc. and then I fill with gasoline. Been keeping the usgi cans gong for many years like this here in FL.. I primarily use the USGI sceptor made plastic cans.

I always just keep all my rigs more than half full like the military taught me. There is no great way to store gas. Diesel on the other hand is a better choice.
