  • Behind the curve!

Been out of major exercise due to a leg injury for about 6 weeks.

You'd be surprised what you "lose" in that time period.

Was only on crutches a few days, then it was "try to stay off it as much as you can" for the rest of the time. That sucked....

Did what I could- knuckle pushups, ab work, watched what I was eating cause sitting around for a couple months can pack on the lbs. Went back to writing down what I ate, cutting calories, etc. and actually dropped about 10 lbs.

As leg got better started slowly working on stretching and strengthening. Did a little shuffle run type deal here and there. Went to physical therapist- he gave me a good working over, then released me. "When do I come back?" You don't, your done, do the stretching and build the strength back up. "Can I run now?" Well let's see- puts me on treadmill. How's that feel. "Fine, although I feel like I'm about 60% weight on one side." Stop that. I say "OK" and shake it out a bit and concentrate on what feels right for my body. He watches me run a bit more and says good.

    And I'm done.

But damn if doing a 2 miler with even a light pack didn't take me about 3 minutes more than it did in December......

yeah, sucks getting older....injuries take longer to heal, and recovery takes longer. I herniated three discs July 2015. Had been working out 4-5days a week for two years. It was so bad, my daughter had to put on my shoes and socks for me as wife was out of country on business. Knew I could not workout and knew from a previous back injury 4 years earlier that it was going to take months to recover. Therefor, like you, I had to watch what went into the piehole. Cut carbs to 25-50/60g per day and shed 18 pounds in just 2 months. After three months my doc allowed me to do some light workouts, but nothing to stress the back. I stayed on diet and continued to lose weight. I have been back to 80% workout level now for about 5-6 months and have kept on the diet. Have gone from 208 at time of injury to 179 this morning. I have changed my workouts to more of a "functional" workout, and realizing I'm not 20 anymore, and focusing on my core and back muscles. I feel great, but know I am aging.

Glad to hear you are recovering. I know you will keep driving on....and OBTW, we affectionately call them Physical Terrorists not Therapists.

Hey, you did pretty good on the 2 miler. Especially since the course was new to you.

        Thanks.

A slightly more grueling course at home (more hills) I typically do in about 3 minutes less.

Yes, but everything is relative. The best time I have on that coarse recently is 24.6 with just my basic 9lb. load and I just did it today in 28.8 with about 29lb. plus the rifle. Of course I'm a year or two older.
