  • Injury affecting effectiveness

About 3 weeks ago, I broke a rib towards the middle of my back while taking down somebody at work. He was about 6'1" 210 and I'm not even close to that. While bringing him down we fell backwards onto the edge of a table, then a large plastic chair, then the floor where he finally had a moment of clarity and stop resisting after about 30 seconds. I barely remembered hitting all those things as I was just a tad busy at the time and there "may" have been a little adrenalin going. After all was said and done I felt like I'd been banged around a little but no big deal.
Fast forward to 5 days later. Left a meeting at work and was joking with another supervisor. Started laughing and felt a huge pain in my back that drove me to my knees. Ended up at the Docs and he said it was broke. Then pointed out the other 4 I've cracked over the years and we had a good laugh. I asked what could we do and he said basically nothing except take it easy for 6 weeks.
Over the past 3 weeks I have found out that a broken rib is much different than a cracked one. There have been a lot of painful learning experience's that have pointed it out and really got me to thinking..what if? Had to change where I EDC. The weight of the things I carried. The speed at which I can do things. How to shoot etc etc.
I've been hurt pretty badly before but never at 55 yrs old. Really made me think "what if?".

I think the hardest thing you will feel at our age is just how long it will take to get back into shape after 6 weeks off. Muscles lose their tone, and everything tightens up. Beware of injuring yourself somewhere else by pushing just a little to hard in your particular rehab regimen. Work the flexibility first, and the strength will come later.

    Tasers, just saying...

Yeah, what Templar said. As we age things do take longer to heal. Add to that that we are impatient and think we can bounce back like we used to when we were 30. Take your time progressing through your rehab so you don't re-injure or cause another injury.

Praying for a quick and complete recovery.

Been nursing a rib injury for about a month now. Just started sparing again recently, then only with people I know stay "in control" a little better.

We have to pace ourselves as we get older. I could have been back out there 2 weeks after, and the recovery time would have been longer.

It hurts to learn these things, some of are "hard charging" types. I have to learn that it's better to watch class for a couple nights to recoup then to get back out there immediately and be injured further or longer.

        Good luck.
