  • Dove Hunting

    Season opens the 1st!!
Time to get the camo, bust out the shotgun, get off the couch work the eyes, work the shotgun and speed reloading skills, find a place to hide maybe take someone with you for some company and chit chat and learn commo with your buddy/family hunters as the bird sneak in behind them. Bring home a dinner from the field to the table on a challenging, humbling target while using some of that coolio gear you bought over the summer.
Today we can laugh and enjoy, tomorrow this moment might be the difference

Well it was a slow morning till we found the birds. Silly us we were near the food and they were at the water and roost sight. Guess they didn't get the memo. Had a couple of new hunters in the family go and while many birds were harmed in the making of this post many were seemingly bored with our shooting LOL
Anyday you can get out with the family and have this kind of fun and learn it's a good day.

Dove is ok like that but hey cardboard could be good like that LOL
Theres a lot of places where teal and dove mix and I used to hunt with some guys that did both at the same time many years ago. I don't really care for duck but love the hunt if I go with folks that do. Thats a good haul you got there

You know as I sat and watched them all hunt. I watched forgotten reloads, well beyond ranges shooting, run plumb outta ammo, forgot the safety and many other things. Yes there were many "negatives" but hey thats what opening day is about working out the kinks and learning or perhaps relearning for some.
But I also saw hmm I should get a better recoil pad and update my gear, it works better when I hold it this way, communication of hey theres a bird and i'm loading, planning in hey we will go over here and drive them your way, I know right where they are going to go now because I have learned what the dove like in a few short hours, teamwork in finding lost birds, who can finish a kill with their hands and who needs more work. A young lady learned her new shotgun and began to rely on it and had a smile. Then a young man learned how to clean and cook them and what they tasted like. He learned the importance of wind direction and feather removal. During cleaning they got to see what the birds had been eating and how so knowing which plants to look for along with small gravel and water is needed.
We even covered having fire tools with you and using the fluff from all the thistle heads that were in great abundance.

When we got back in we ripped down the shotguns and cleaned them. For some it was a first for some it was old hat. Breaking down ones weapon is never a wasted venture and carbon removal never dies.

It was fun and the weather was great especially from the day before at 105 degree, it was 15 degrees cooler yesterday and scattered cloud cover and a breeze was nice.

Yep it was a hunt, an adventure and perhaps training but definitely a learning experience that made an old man smile.

Thats awesome Matt!! Training up the kids is one of our tools to keep our country free. Its pretty cool when you see a kid finally "get it" and he connects with the shot. My son has not yet started shotgun but im thinking about a 410 to get him started and probably either dove or quail next year. Get him duck huntin in two years. It's tuff for kids to hunt ducks where I go though because its usually soo darn cold and we hunt in water most of the time so there is the safety factor also. But he does a fair amount of rifle work now

yeah I know.. no eye protection. His got left at home and dads spare pair just wouldn't stay on his head when he was behind the AR.. We also have a little eye dominance issue we are dealing with as seen in the pic with the red ryder.
