    Stick Fighting Combatives
The least of my favorite fighting subjects which is why it is so important to discuss and train in. Stick fighting doesn't have the coolio toys n gadgets of the latest black rifle and is well a stick. It doesn't have to be a special stick it just has to be an object that can be used like a stick.

I don't have anything fancy to train with just 2 each 1 inch thick dowel rods from Lowes cut to 28 inches with the saw blade on my SOG machete. That way when I break them at under $8 I won't cry like I would with the $35- $50 sticks many use. I see them break all the time. I'm also hoping one day to own a set of these so I no longer worry about breakage.

Most people can pick up a stick and swing like a bat but give them two and it becomes a tangled mess shortly rather than a force multiplier. A quick look back in history, to include recently, will show that the masses fought oppression and tyranny many times with mere more than stick and/or common tools and in fact many martial arts evolved from this and yet we overlook it often because we desire other cool toys.
The flow and look of a master ninja doesn't come easily to many including myself that struggled immensely with it however with practice and viewing others I finally got my AHAA moment and it clicked. I'm by no means looking like Bruce Lee in high speed but I can get around. Once I got it figured out I went to training with someone else recently and was immediately chastised for not being able to do it right after spending months learning how LOL. I guess there are different ways of doing things just like guns and trainers.

The moves are used in other fighting as well and this video from Janich breaks it down nicely and shows the value of heaven 6 basic stick moves:

The folks here show some footwork in their drills as well. Footwork especially lateral movement taking you off centerline makes a huge difference in your survivability in all forms of combatives.

One thing I must caution you on is just working sticks in the air. I see this often and feel that is a mistake. It is a whole different ballgame once you start hitting people and they start fighting back. At least hit the bag or other objects to get the feel and know what to expect.

A set of these are also nice. I don't own any personally yet but we have them at work and they come in handy to be able to do force on force training.

The stick can be combined with any other form of weaponry to include guns and knives and different fighting styles to make it into a combatives program. One might find themselves using a stick then accessing a greater weapon like a gun later after earning some distance and giving some injuries to an opponent. You might start from the ground and fight your way to standing a gain a stick so all aspects should be learned once you get the basics down.

I'm still learning but we all gotta start somewhere so hopefully this will be a motivator

Must admit I've done very little with sticks unless you consider using a rifle or pistol as impact weapon, takedown tool, etc.

I remember watching some French SHTF movie "Time of the Wolf" and the Dad gets killed and the Mom and kids are wandering about aimlessly- unarmed of course. At one point you see wooden chairs in a pile being burned. I'm like "damn woman, break one of those chair legs off!" LOL

Lost my favorite Maglite and we were putting up rabbits earlier in the week. Used a 3 foot piece of dowel rod. That worked fine and seemed to give it more of a "whip" type feel. Great tool for beating tension out of the body also.
