So as part of Search and Rescue qualification to be on the wilderness backcountry team, our group has a requirement to be able to hike a local trail that is 2 miles & gains 1800 feet in elevation within 1hour with a 25lb pack.
Well this morning I failed, I only made it 1/2 way up. Due to many reasons.
The biggest reason was no air, my legs didn't feel tired even on the steepest part.
I had not be doing any training hikes, mostly because I haven't wanted to spend the money on the gas needed to get there. Or so I told myself, A bogus mindset.
Also I have been doing aqua-exercise for the past year. which has helped my overall fitness. But hasn't really done a lot for extended cardio fitness.
So lessons learned, it's easy to get complacent and delude yourself into thinking you are fitter than you really are.
If you want to be able to hike or do whatever then that is the best training.
If you think you are going to grab your BOB or GHB and hoof it cross country, then that's what you need to be doing now.
So even though I have been practicing skills, if your basic level of fitness is not there then you are **#!.
I need to start working on more functional fitness and still lose some more weight. So I'll be hitting the trail at least twice a week and continue the aqua exercise.
I post this so others may give themselves an honest assessment of their physical fitness level.
