  • Pencil Sharpener tinder maker for your BOB

I saw this picture and thought it would be worth while to share. I have not tried it yet but it makes sense. I will be trying this and hope others will too.

I'd like to see a pencil sharpener that can stand up to actually sharpening pencils, It seems like they've gotten fairly cheapy cheap lately. I have had several lately that have a metal blad screwed into a plastic body, and the plastic has tended to break where it meets the metal.

Quite talking about the year you graduated and like you know what a pencil is for. That would imply knowing how to read and write :D

In seriousness, I think I tried this a long time ago and had mixed results. But honestly, nothing that pencil sharpener will do that a regular knife won't do just as well. And have more used overall.

But saying that, I might give it a try.

Easy on the references to my birth year!!

Anywho I got me a pencil sharpener from Big Lots, actually 2 for the price of 1. It actually is a two holed sharpener, 1 for pencils and 1 for crayons. The crayon hole will work well i think for bigger twigs. I will hopefully get to try this out over the weekend.

Ok so i did a test on how well i can get shavings from a twig, it did that just fine. The problem I ran into was when I broke the twig off it split in the middle and as I was turning the sharpener around the twig it caught the split and broke the plastic sharpener. I wasn't watching as closely as I probably should have.

                  1. make sure the end doesn't split so the razor won't get caught on the split and break the plastic case.

                  2. fail now when your life doesn't depend on it.

                  3. try new things

If the holder wasn't made out of plastic I think this would work really well at creating thin tinder...I am not that good at creating tinder with my knife so I would like this. I have scratched the surface of Birch for shavings and I know that works well but if birch isn't readily available u need another option.

Thanks, this kinda confirms what I was thinking on it

Stop being such a manbeast and this might not happen :D

Good deal though, trying as opposed to just reading.

Ha I wish that were the case. :) I was using a piece of Maple. If I had scored around the outside of the twig and then broke it I don't think it would have split. I will test that next time.

As soon as I get a cup of coffee into me you will get your 20. LOL

I did find a sharpener that has a metal case. I think that might hold up a little better.

I think I found an aluminum metal sharpener... I will update more on this later

Got it! Office Depot has them for $1.49 (2-hole), appears to be cast aluminum, has more heft to it than the plastic one I tried.

I will test it on some twigs and see how it holds up...my expectations are high on this one.
