    Night Navigation

Night navigation is something very near and dear to me since I did/do a lot of it between hunting, hiking and the military. My main method for non-military is to use mainly land features and the moon and stars since I know where I

Ok, back to childhood memories. When we were young (and stupid), we used to play a game. We went out into the woods in the back of our house (about 1 1/2 miles wide and 15 miles long)...taking one of us blindfolded at night. The trick was to find your way home. I spent many a night curled up under a tree waiting for daylight until I know the woods like the back of my hand.

Could I do that today? No. Fortunately, three of the ways home from work are 'greenways' that are easy to follow. Unfortunately, there'll be a lot of others there too. Two other ways are along power lines...less people. I've walked them a few times for fun but not recently. Time to get out again.

Funny it was discussed at the training about a potential land nav course...I'll get with your offline about it.

A timely topic since I hav been walking into my hunting areas this past week. A couple of suggestions for folks, look-up how your eyes function, specifically how the rods & cones work & how they are arranged inside the eye. This will help explain my next tip, use your perprieril vision at night. Look out the sides of your eyes, and keep your eyes moving. If you need to really look at something turn your head and look at it from several angles.
Another tip is, when puttting your foot down, put the heel down first & then kinda roll the rest of it onto the ground, and don't put you hole weight on it until you test it. This sounds more tedious than it actually is, as practice helps.
A great skill to have and to practice.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

one big key is learning how to move off of stars and knowing how to keep a sense of direction. at night time its easy to get turned around but one thing to look for during daylight is large items such as pine trees or bushes. depending on how thick your area is with brush, trees and other nature.
Whats the point of having and not knowing how to use? You dont have a car and not know how to drive it do you? Having the tools for the job is worthless with out the knowledge of how to use it!
