    Youth Deer Season 2012
Well the deer won LOL but we had a good time anyway and enjoyed the company of my family around me in the wild. The area was as beautiful as ever and the nights were cool and unfortunately the days were hot.
We had a visitor, the huntress made the fur fly!

We tried cattail and thistle stinging nettle flower heads as tender too. The area was way too dry to build fires safely so we kept it to this.

ate a 2yr old mainstay that had no special treatment and rode in the pack in extreme temps etc. Even had some help getting them little tasty squares down!

We discussed the uses of yucca as cordage and eating cactus which was a recovering for some and new to others

It was a good test for the vehicle that was used because my truck had transmission issues

something to keep in mind because this happened last minute and I had to react with plan B if we wanted to go. Same thing could happen on day x

Great post Matt. Nothing like getting out and practicing. I've never had much luck with thistleheads as a tender, with a flint. I also was unable to find a 'sucidal' buck during the early muzzleloader season, but I'm hopeful for the late Nov. season.
Looks like a wonderful part of the country.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Yep it was a real good time soon to be followed by my muzzleloader season.
One thing that came up was I transported a few tent/toliet marking solar lights in a totebox and i should have put them on the dash so they would be charged for use once i hit camp. When I hit there was only 2hrs of daylight left after work and I got there and they had been on in the dark totebox so no light that night, with them anyway.
                    Just food for thought

VERY COOL! We're heading out soon too. One of my buddies was generous enough to offer us some doe tags. My 9 year old will be practicing a lot for that first grand spiritual moment of her first deer. She's got a javelina under her belt. Good luck to you all and keep it up!

                        Widow Makers

Hanging tree branches like this are often refered to as widow makers. They can fall in a moments notice after withstanding a hurricane force wind and for no reason just collapse. Knowing this strangley enough we are drawn to them as their very design brings beauty and danger. In fact myself walked passed this and couldnt help but clown around near/on it even knowing better. I scolded myself later for being a idiot. This one is about 14ft high at the break and weighs more than a pickup could pull.
Dont use them in making camp, shelters or anything other than maybe a deadfall trap.

In fact when setting up camp and utilizing trees we should look up and walk around the area and make sure no high hangers are lurking.
I know, yes I know preppers you are gonna bugin, hear it all the time. You think. You might have to walk home, you might have to leave so please dont rule out these outdoorsy skills.
