  • Rendering Tallow

ahhh the great mystery of rendering hard animal tallow into a liquified substance that may form back into a purified somewhat hardend substance that is useable for various things such as soap making, candles, oil lamps etc. I watched Dave Canterbury render the tallow video series and remember thinking it doesnt look that hard. Well it isnt folks. You ever cooked bacon well thats the start process of collecting the grease then it just needs to be strained for purity and then worked into whatever project you have in mind. I started with some pronghorn antelope tallow I had recently saved. Make sure you get as much of the meat off of the hard tallow before starting. All animals have some stored fat some more than others and some tastes/smells better than others.

I then cooked in a small pot on my grill because we are still in a burn ban here so authenticity has to take a backstage for a bit

I then poured the pure grease into a empty but cleaned soup can. A bit of cheesecloth or t-shirt material can be used to really strain it.

I dont want anyone to go oh "i can do that" and then fail on the day of need so by all means try it. It doesnt require you go to exoctica land and kill a creature of beauty and obtain a huge expense but try it with some bacon fat or something and then make or do something with it. I didnt get a whole lot from this antelope, in fact if they were my sole reliance i'd be in deep water because they just dont have that much.

Off topic a bit, but what's the plan once the skunk is in that Have-A-Hart trap? Won't he spray if you approach?

If that trap is big enough that the skunk can lift its tail in it you gonna be wearing some bad cologne.
