  • Special K protein shakes

We've been using these for a while now. Just could never get the shake mixes "right" to where they were worthwhile to drink IMO.

These are pre-mixed and very filling IMO.

190 calories each and 10 grams of protein. Cut it half and half with milk to make them last longer and not so thick.

Great after workout way to add some protein in.

They are sold unrefrigerated also. I might stick a 4 pack back and see how they far for a couple years.

Perhaps another way to get protein into the diet in an emergency??

Often times I come home after training and work the kettlebells for a while before I settle in for the night and have one of these or a Zone Protein bar.

We don't eat a boatload of meat, so for us, these are a good way to get more protein into our diets.

    They taste good too :)

i run the eas stuff from sams club ( 5 lb sack of it) chocolate-
its around 130 cals,4 carbs and 2 sugars and 23-25g of protien per scoop.
they just swicthed brands and its bumped to 120 cals, 9 carbs but low sugars still.

i mix it with about 8-10 oz of water in a shaker style mixer cup. I add fiber and mono/creatine to it as well.
If i add a full 16 oz's it gets kinda watered down( like skim milk) ugghh...anything lower than 8 oz's it is thick like a "shake"...i try and get it near that 10-12 oz for a drinkable form LOL

i gotta watch the cals/carbs/sugars part of things which is why i havent gone to any of the pre made drinks.

    how are the zone bars?
they were on sale at target...and i think "J" has had them and likes them.
Im regulated to the power bar protien bites .......( low carbs /sugars again) ......i know you'd love the brownie ones......( i have the fudge ,p-butter ones but aint had them yet)...
i used to eat the cliff bars all the time, but right now...not so much.

I carry and use the equate and other brand in my bags. I use them alot hunting where I'm burning thru calories, they are not the best hot but that stuff never really bothered me. My hiking buddy cant even watch me drink them hot without getting sick himself LOL.
mmmmm cliff bars, I gotta watch myself around them

I've learned to like the Cliff bars, I used to hate them.

The Zone bars are really good imo, the Chocolate Mint being the best. Some are better than others.

i just wish they would come up with a protein mix that would mix well with water...i have tried several brands and none of them really cut it using water, so I use Milk and they are thick that way. I like EAS protein mix, strawberry flavor and throw in a banana and its on! Also toss in a scoop of Optimum Nutrition Creatine (the german Creapure stuff not that crap from china). Haven't had the extra $$ for this in a long while so I just throw my money towards preps but if I did....

Hi Guys, late to the thread here but I thought I would add some things. I started a low calorie diet earlier this year but a few months in noticed I was losing some muscle mass and strength. I realized I was favoring carbs too much and really neglecting to get in sufficient protein- probably 50G a day or less. I have since started a little conditioning and try to get my protein levels up to about 150 G/day, which is hard for me because I just usually don't eat that much animal products.

I have tried the EAS vanilla flavor shake from Sams. From a taste perspective, I much prefer the cytosport brand from Costco. Both the vanilla and chocolate are actually pretty good. I'm on a weight loss program and my morning breakfast is usually a double serving of fiber one cereal, and I use the vanilla protein mix in my cereal instead of milk. This is about 250 calories and gives me over a days supply of fiber as well as 27 grams of protein. Both the chocolate and vanilla taste pretty good with cold coffee mixed it-kinda like a mocha drink. From a cost perspective i believe the product is roughly .50-.60/svg.

I've had decent luck mixing mine in a shaker. I add scoop of mix, about four ice cubes, and a little room temp water. Shake until the ice melts and chills the drink.

I am considering adding some of this to my preps, it has a two year shelf life and is relatively cheap protein. I think I could rotate enough to store a few bags without problems.

Hadn't thought about it with coffee! Great idea!

I too, lost a lot of muscle mass when I cut weight. It took me a couple months to get it back. If anything I'm stronger now than I was previously and because of the weight loss, more agile.

During the cut I was doing well to do some of my kettlebell exercises with a 35. Now the 40 is pretty easy and I told the wife a 45lb. kb for Christmas would be nice.

So I assume you like kettlebell training? Hey I've been thinking about taking some kettlebell training. I just found a local guy willing to teach for a very reasonable amount. His is RKC certified.

Back to the mixes: I haven't tried either with hot coffee, but I in the past used hot cocoa mix in my coffee. I'm a wimp and like my coffee with all the cutesy flavored creams. I may try some chocolate protein mix in the morning instead of my regular cream. I'm still trying to lose so every calorie counts. If I can substitute a protein powder for creamer, that is calories I can allocate to something else to eat later in the day.

I do see some concerns in some posts about the quality and purity of protein in various mfgs products. I saw the consumer reports online concerning heavy metals in some products. I would like to some day concentrate on animal protein as my primary source but that is kinda expensive a real inconvenient.
