Theres not alot of use for these as far as I know. If anyone has stuff to add please do.
They are good to cut open and place around the perimter of the area to keep flying insects down. They however do not keep ants away and when they are ripe ants will infest them. So dont be tempted to take the white milky fluid and smear it on yourself thinking it will drive flying insects away because them ants will eat you alive before you wake up!

The article said it was a mosquito repellent with similar activity to DEET. So mosquitos won't bother you but the ants will eat you alive.

Yup, thats what i said too. In the pic they are hard to make out but the fruits were covered in ants. partly because of how dry it is here and these have alot of moisture

Around these parts I have also heard them called 'hedge apples'.
I know of more than one person using them to deter skunks.
One fella had a Mamma and babies living under his house. He threw some of these through the crawl hole and claims he got rid of them.
A desire changes nothing, a decision changes some thing's, but determination changes everything.

Osage-orange, prized by the indians for bows (and modern day longbow men). Made good fence post. A lady told me the fruit (I think) would keep spiders away, don't know never messed with it. It's a real art to making a bow from the heartwood.

We call 'em Osage Oranges too! They are not nearly as plentiful as they have been in years past.

They make great 'exploding' targets for high velocity rifles and pistols.

Hedge wood has been known to burn so hot it will melt a wood stove so be careful.
