  • Finally we start walking

Me and the Ever so Lovely went for our Initial Walking/Jogging/ Foot shuffle session after all these years....normally she does 2 miles on the elliptical (picked up at a yard sale for $10...OH YEAH) and I ride my Mtn. Bike 15 miles at the Trails once or twice a month....

Well, we found a track near the FIL so he could watch the Hellions, and we did our first 2.5 miles this evening. We Power Walked and jogged what we could, but dangit it felt good.

We are going backpacking this weekend, so I wanted her to get a feel for moving on ground not a machine. The path is recycled tires so it feels a lil nicer than cement or asphalt.

Its going to be funny as hell Wed night when I do 4 miles wearing a 30lbs pack....cant wait to see the looks on the folks out there.

I hope you have experience wearing a 30lb pack or the look on your face after 4 miles might also be priceless. Grats if you already know the experience. Two events I'll never forget: my wife thinking a 10 mile hike in the ozark wilderness with a 30lb pack was easy and the sightseeing folks mocking me as I trecked beside them with a loaded pack out to the crag until they watched me and the dogs decend 300 ft into the valley below with 5 miles left to go and no trail to speak of.

Oh yeah, when I go Mtn. Biking I am pushing 25lbs in the pack....last time I went backpacking I was at 50 and did 22 miles in 2 days going up hill both ways (seemed like it in the Cohutta)....if the wife wasnt going, I could take the hammock and be around 25lbs or less....she is carrying the food and clothes in her pack...that way, if wild animals attack she can "fend em off" while I fire...lol

Good on ya for getting out there Wiseowl!

Good shoes/boots already broken in, change of socks, good stretching before, plenty of calcium the day before (helps with charlie horses so I hear), distribute the weight in your pack correctly, keep your back straight when you walk.

Don't push your kids and wife too much too early on. Let them have fun just getting out there with you. If you make it the proverbial "death march" they won't want to come back.

My wife is 100% on board for prepping, but we both need to get into better physical shape. Finally got my wife commited to walking last month. Even with the hot weather and drought here, we walked 145 miles (using pedometers) in the last 30 days! We are walking 4 - 6 miles every morning at 6:30 am, regardless of excuses, aches or pains. We are motivating each other.

We are in our 50s and 60s and we are feeling better every day.

Our goal for this month is 200 miles of walking with some light jogging.

Our goal for month 3 will be for both of us to walk a total of 150 miles with 27 lb. B.O.B.s!

Our daily goal is leaner (better physical shape), meaner (becoming more self sufficient) and smarter (gaining more skill sets).

Me and the Mrs. will continue to do this at least 2 nights a week, she starts back school in a week or two, but the elliptical is our best friend being in the bed room so I can watch ....um....uh.....survival shows...(those women work out shows)......and as for the kids, the 3 and a half year old hiked 2 miles when he was 2 to Raven Cliff Falls, well until he found a creek to play in. As for the new born, I bought the carrier to carry him on short hikes in the fall. When these boys get older, they will be going on hikes once or twice a month.....

It is my wifes first "backpacking" trip this weekend and it will be funny so see how she does without a straigtening iron and a blow dryer......and drinking from the streams and eating out of a bookbag.........should be interesting but tons of fun. If any of yall haven't ever been to the Cohutta Wilderness, I would suggest you go. Its great and still in GA.

Once it cools down, I cant wait to get back on Daucet Trails.......best biking South of Atlanta....and during the fall, its paradise!

WiseOwl, good for you and your wife in making the commitment to exercise and get into shape. My husband and I are doing the same. We are not going out hiking but we are working out most every morning with circuit training before he goes to work. We definitely feel better. The hiking sounds like a lot of fun.

Its funny because we just got finished packing the bags....I have a 3900 cubic inch that I am weighing in the 30-34lbs range...she has a day hike bag and is at 17lbs soaking wet!!!!! I am so ticked because somehow she just kept packing stuff in mine, so now she is the "cupboard", I told her if the bears come, she is gotta hold em off!

I say that because my buddies were up there last weekend and woke up to 2 adolescent bears in their camp....they had the food 30 feet up and 30 yards away....I guess the yonahs were just curious, funny thing is, one of the guys let off a .45 round just to scare them off and they didn't even flinch. The pots and pans banging and yelling is what scared em.......

Tomorrow I go walk at the track with my pack on........yall should see all the folks out there, big folks, bless their hearts. I commend them. I oughta go with my pack in a pair of briefs just to see their reactions....lol

Me and my wife just started as well. We can do 2 miles with our 2 kids tagging along. Since it's not far I don't bring all my regular stuff with me, but always have at least a 10lb bag of "essentials". We are starting small, but plan on 5 miles eventually.
