98 year old woman receives her 10th degree black belt in JUDO....

Having been on the receiving end of more than a few Judo throws, this is actually amazing to me.

Here's an Osoto Gari for her!

No kidding. I'm pretty sure this wasn't classes at the McDojo

And Judo is not exactly Tai Chi or something. Some throws can be done gracefully or can be done fairly brutally. I can't imagine enduring that in my 60's, let alone in my 90's!!!

I believe 10th degree black belt is not awarded for sparring and kata.
It's more of an honor in recognition of lifetime of effort to the art.
Not to say she was not a hell of a physically capable judoka in her younger years.
She probably had it especially hard and had to prove herself more than her male counterparts in her early days.
The Japanese can be and certainly used to be just a little hard headed and traditionalist in those matters.:)

Speaking as a Black Belt, I respect her ranking 100%. I learned a lesson in humility long ago. I was disrespectful to a higher ranking belt because I thought I could easily defeat this person in a kumite despite the fact I was several ranks below . 15 seconds into the match, my glasses where knocked off, my head was sore, and my mouth was bloody. Lesson learned.
