  • The Tripod

We should look at our fighting skills like a TRIPOD. Each leg of the tripod is something different-

I always keep it simple and call them "Firing- Fitness- and Fieldcraft."

*Fitness is pretty self explanatory- be able to run, carry your gear all day, lift yourself over obstacles, with the stamina necessary both cardio and muscular stamina to fight an extended period of time.

*Firing is all of our weaponcraft and combatives skills. From safety and good trigger control, to being able to point shoot a rifle at 50 yards in the dark.

*Fieldcraft is tactics, ability to survive in the field with what you can carry with you- or very little, patrolling, working in conjunction with a team, individual skills such as tracking, map reading and land navigation, etc.

Just like a TRIPOD- take away one leg and the tripod falls over. If you can shoot better than Hatchcock and disappear like a ninja, but can't run 20 yards to unarse the AO when that's necessary, your gonna be in trouble. Likewise if your as fit as an Olympic Athelete , as sneaky as a ninja, but can't use your weapons worth a damn, your gonna be in trouble.

Also if ONE LEG is shorter than the other, you will default to that short leg. The lack of ability in one realm could translate over to trouble even if the other "legs" are strong.

I've talked about this concept numerous times at classes, but I've rarely put it down on paper. While the concept is designed for fighting with weapons in a SHTF/survival type deal, it does also equate out to other realms as well.
