  • Splitting your focus

One thing that helped me when I was cutting the almost 50 lbs. was not splitting my focus.

So often you hear people that are trying to lose weight say "well I put three back on but it's muscle and muscle weighs more than fat." Does it really? Anyone have a definite on that, with research? Not doubting just very curious.

I worked out while cutting weight those months, but nothing like I have been since about March. A couple of times during the cut I worked out pretty hard. Despite not changing anything with caloric intake, I noticed an increase in weight and a slowing of weight loss.

So after a while I did a light workout regularly but didn't "hit it too hard" because my main focus at that time was losing the weight.

I think the strategy worked out. I lost everything I needed to lose. Most definitely lost some muscle though.

My focus the last couple months has been on working on the strength. I've still been watching what I eat, but not cutting weight. I remain in the 175 to 177 range. The changes in diet I implemented haven't been hard to keep up with.

I think it's important for folks to take a realistic look and figure out what their best move is and put ALL of your effort into that versus splitting your focus.

If you have 20 lbs. to lose, focus on getting the weight off first, then work on your strength training in earnest. Understand I'm not suggesting you let your muscle atrophy during that time period, focus on maintenance for sure.

Focusing your mind on your target weight number will help. As Americans we are easily distracted. We have to break that habit if we are going to get this done.

    Good luck!

Good point, but I should point out that it really depends on the TYPE of exercise you do while you're trying to lose the weight. If all you did was cardio, (which most of us need) then you won't gain weight. If you do strength training, with weights, then you will. You got it right, IMHO, in that first you need to lose the weight, then worry about muscle tone, strength, etc. One goal at a time, right?
