Okay, I bit the bullet today and signed up at a local gym. It's not that I don't like to exercise, it's just that I can't usually bring myself to do it. This is more like commitment. i.e. it's costing me money. Keeping in mind that I am a SERIOUS couch potato, this should be interesting. (Said like the guy who found himself in a locked room with a grizzly.) I plan to take it slow, with a LOT of aerobic stuff to start. The plan is to get into shape WITHOUT having the coronary in the process. I know I'm in the worst physical condition of my life, and have to change that.

Of particular interest, I chose the month-by-month plan, rather than the yearly one. The month-by-month will cost me about three dollars extra per month over the yearly one, but I'm pretty sure we don't have a year before it falls apart. That's the other reason to do what I should have done last year.... It's like Lowdown says, if you can't run 100 yards without stopping for air, you might be in trouble. I'm not sure I could run 10 yards right now.

Slow and steady Bearman. Set bite-sized goals. Don't start running 5 miles or squatting 400lbs or benching 225. Slow and steady.

Not to worry Knobster. I realize just how bad my physical condition really is. I look at it like I didn't get into this bad a shape overnight, and I won't get back into decent shape overnight either. The thought process was a bit interesting. I considered signing up for a Tae Kwon Do class or other martial art. The idea was that it's a structured program, with definite goals. (I know, Kung Mungy Foo or whatever is better, but the idea was that it was a program.) I decided to go with a gym because a) I already know enough of the moves, I just need to be able to do them, and b) it's on the way to school and is between me and most of the stuff I do in town anyway. The idea is that I can stop in there, do a workout, and then go and do whatever was taking me to town anyway. Now all I have to do is work it into my routine, or at least develop one that includes hitting the gym.
