  • Just started BJJ again...hurting all over

Whats up guys, not sure how many of you train Brazilian JJ, but those that do know what I'm talking about. You can workout doing anything and everything but grappling against grown men forces you to use muscles you didn't know you had.

I used to roll with a very competitive school and I earned my blue belt there before having to quit for various reasons. Well its been 2 and a half years and I'm getting back on the horse, this time with a slightly more mellow group because I hope to actually avoid being crippled before I'm 50.

Anyway for those lucky enough to have the chance to train bjj, I highly recommend it.

:) Ahhhh the joys of grappling!

Core. It seems to be mostly about core strength. Have you seen some of those crazy kettlebell exercises that Sonny Puzikas does? I started doing them about year or so ago now and it's really helped.

People don't understand that you can have great cardio for running, but it doesn't always translate to good cardio in combatives. It definitely took me by surprise.

Good luck, stick with it! It's easier to keep going.

My Sensei told me, pain is just weakness leaving the body. My response to him about a week ago was, that any day now, I should be Superman.

Nice pic. I happen to show up to my first class on blue belt review night....it turned into a 2 1/2 hour review of about 2 dozen basic techniques. Great primer, but my body forgot how to get into those positions! I'm mostly sore in the inner thigh, the upper/lower back, the forearms, and the sides of my flank.

There are also MMA classes at the school that I might check out after a couple of months. Personally I prefer the traditional brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Gi, but its good to train no-gi and practice adding strikes sometimes too. What kind of class are we looking at in that pic? Traditional Japanese JJ, BJJ, or something else??

Our style is called Tong Hop Moo Sool. Literally means, a combination of the arts. My Shihan developed it, taking things from a number of other styles........Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Judo, Shotokan, Shorinryu, Ju-Jitsu, Aikido, Chinese Kenpo....(as well as some other things here and there) and combining them into his own. Very MMA like in many respects. I really like it because its very street oriented and practical, not competition based.

Sounds like just the thing I need to look for. Thanks!
