It takes a lot of energy and effort, but one of the best things to do is keep track of what you are eating and the amount of calories it is. Then you will realize what you are actually taking in and be shocked. After that choose what you want to consume and do your best to stick to it. I'm a spamming POS

I did what someone else has already mentioned. I cut out the "cheep calories". I cut out sugar, pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, corn. All of the high starch, easy-energy crap foods. They also account for a ton (pun intended) of calories. Replaced them with real meats, green vegetables - fresh as much as possible. I don't worry about my fats, but then I have crazy cholesterol anyway, 87 total.
I've dropped 30 pounds since February. I dropped about half fairly quickly, now it's a few pounds a month, but always trending down. I'm ok with that.
