That looks exciting. I would like to take a class like that someday. I have several books on plants; edible, variety, poisonous, etc. but being able to go and have someone show you is the ultimate teacher.

30 some years ago when my wife's family moved here they found a patch of wild onions. If you carefully pick a portion and then let the rest go back to seed they will multiply every year. depending on rainfall you could get a lot or little (they love water). Sometime after moving here the family found out that one of the Native American's tradition/diet was gathering "wild onions" and mixing them with eggs. We have manny meals with wild onions and eggs and it's a must at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
A desire changes nothing, a decision changes some thing's, but determination changes everything.

Sweet! Congrats on getting out and learning!

Take pics and notes if you can and put up an AAR here when you get back.

Update us on how the class went when you get a chance.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

I did make it back out. I've just been very busing planning my wedding with my future bride...and her mother... and her sister... and her other sister.....and my mother. I should have stayed in the mountains. The class went well. It did get down to 9 degrees when we went to sleep. I decided to use my moquito jungle hammock. though i was warm in my 0 degree bag, frost and ice formed down the side of my hammock, and any time you weren't over the sleeping pad, you got cold.
We learned how to make rope from the back of tree bark, then we used that rope to make a rake. We built survival shelters and used the rake to rake the leaves. We used the leaves as shingles that went two feet out from our shelter to insulate and keep dry. We also learned how to purify water the old way. basically by blowing on a coal from the fire on a split log and forming a bowl. you put the water in your bowl and take rocks from the fire and boil the water. (think i'll stick with my katadyn hiker water filter). then we also learned how to "bank" a fire which i found very cool. and he also taught us how to make fire with a hand drill. i think the bow drill is alot easier. or even my firesteel. very useful info.

This weekend coming up, we have the 2nd part of the survival class where were learn about food and plants to eat, what plants can be used as medicinal purposes, building snares and traps for varmint edibles. also hunting and cooking of food will be covered. i will try to get you guys a run down next week of what happened this weekend. If anyone lives in North GA and wants to take a survival/hiking trip, some buddies and myself are going in the middle of April. We go and test our BOB's. Trade ideas on different fire starting, small game hunting, little secrets that can help oneself while surviving in the forest. Hope you all have a good day.

Sounds like it was a fun time. I'm jealous; so far everyone in my area who hunts/fishes/hikes/etc are not interesting in pushing themselves...
