  • What can be done in a short period of time.

Got some local friends I've been training for about a year now. Range time has only been quarterly but we've also been gathering about once a month for a few hours to do dry work with rifle and pistol, as well as H2H and knife work.

Pointing out one guy in particular- I would say late 20's/early 30's. He started earlier this year. He was an "associate" (as another member here would say) from another venue. But he had ZERO firearms experience- ZERO. No "grandpappy taught me to shoot when I was 12" non sense. Absolutely NOTHING as a background. Isn't a liberal but had just never had any firearms experience, as in never had popped a single cap. We will call him John but that's not his name.

In this training group there is a variety of experience levels including some people with "specialty" area expertise from previous .mil service.

"John" puts in the work and is very excited to learn firearms training. "Coach I will be there!" I hear and he is. He missed once due to some wedding and was pissed when he couldn't get out of the wedding.

You would THINK coming from a background of never even touching a firearm till he was late 20's/early 30s that "John" would be clusterF to teach. He's not. He listens well and IMMEDIATELY applies any correction. He's very humble (a pre-req to true learning). He always come prepared and ready to train. I've never had to say "you ought to lube your rifle" or "you might want to toss that aftermarket mag in the trash."

He thinks through purchases but not in the classic prepper "research" way. He doesn't have "gucci gear" but his gear works and does not HINDER him when it's time to train. When he has had an issue with something gear wise, he has dealt with it, not tried to work around it.

Never let anyone tell you that you have to have .mil or .leo training to get to a certain level, that's utter BS. I've seen this guy perform as well as our higher level .mil guys after just a little bit of training.

"Civilians" can learn these defensive skills and learn them well. They just can't do them the lazy prepper way (reading or watching YT). They have to put in the WORK. "John" proves that anyone can do that, regardless of previous experience level.

How are YOU improving in 2024?

John was a clean slate, and willing to take instruction which is refreshing. Unlike the guy that has "training" and doesn't want to change or learn.

Remember, practice makes permanence not perfect. If you learn something wrong and keep practicing the wrong way, you will get get good at wrong.
