  • Stop Smoking Medication and Precautions

Smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the US. Smoking claims around 400000 lives in a year. In spite of these facts about 25% of adults in the United States continue to smoke because smoking is addictive due to the presence of nicotine in cigarettes. The people who stop smoking experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms like depressed mood, disrupted sleep , irritability, frustration, anger, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, restlessness, decreased heart rate and increased appetite or weight gain. The withdrawal symptoms are another reason for the continued high rate of people who smoke. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved five Stop smoking medication aids all of which are effective. Among these four are nicotine replacement therapies like gum, inhaler, nasal spray and patches which relieve the smoker of withdrawal symptoms and cravings for cigarette without the dangers of carbon monoxide, tar and carcinogens. The other medication is a non-nicotine agent called Zyban or Wellbutrin.

Though Zyban is effective it is not recommended in some cases. It contains the same active ingredient that is found in Wellbutrin which is used as an anti depressant. Hence it should not be used in combination with Wellbutrin or bupropion. Overdose of Zyban might cause seizures. Hence a dose of more than 300gm/day should not be used. The risk of seizures also depends on patient factors, clinical situations and concurrent medications. Patients with a history of head trauma or prior seizure, central nervous system tumor, presence of severe hepatic cirrhosis should not use Zyban. Zyban combined with excessive use of alcohol or sedatives, addiction to opiates, cocaine or stimulants increase the chances of seizure.

wow banned on one post, is that a new record? :)

I understand smoking is a terrible thing, but I look at it like my grandfather taught me, what would it be like if all those people dying from smoking didnt die? what would the population in America be then? What about the world? Could we feed that many people if they lived that much longer?

People die, how they get there is their choice, not mine (that is unless they come unwelcomed on my property-GodBlessTexas)...

Cut back on cigarettes gradually (if you cut back gradually, be sure to set a quit date on which you WILL quit). Ways to cut back gradually include: plan how many cigarettes you will smoke each day until your quit date, making the number you smoke smaller each day; buy only one pack at a time; change brands so you don't enjoy smoking as much; give your cigarettes to someone else, so that you have to ask for them each time you want to
        smoke.

Chantix is a fairly new medication for smoking cessation as is HIGHLY effective. I quit smoking 2 years ago using it. It requires a prescription.

I LOVED smoking. If it wasn't for the fact that it's unhealthy and socially unacceptable, I'd still be smoking. I never thought I could quit. I'd tried many times only to fail. This medication has no nicotine. The drug binds to the place where nicotine binds to give pleasure, so that smoking is no longer appealing.

It's a real answer to anyone who needs to quit!

Just quit!! I quit cold turkey, after smoking 2 packs (or more a day of Marlboro's) for years (I think around 4 or 5 years), smoked a total of 10 years, and grew up in a smoking house. Total time of 1st hand and 2nd hand smoke 25 years!! I have been smoke free for almost 11 years.
