Water Filter Suggestion: Katadyn Pocket Water Microfilter OR Lifesaver Bottle 4000

Just wanted to see what everyone thought of these two filters. I know there are many others, but these both seem to be good. I've leaned toward the Katadyn before, but the Lifesaver Bottle looked pretty legit in the videos. Any thoughts on the two, or filters in general?

I would like to recommend the Katadyn Hiker Pro...it is light weight and gets the job done. I have tested it in different types of water and everytime it comes out super clean. And it used to be around $90 I have found it for $60 on some sites....very good product for the money

If you decide on the Pocket Filter- the best portable filter out there IMO- wait till around Thanksgiving. The site sponsor will probably be able to save you some money on these during a "Black Friday" sale ;)

I was planning on getting the Katadyn Mini Filter with my Christmas money. For me it is easier to go with this one than the pocket filter.

I bought the Katadyn and keep it in my bob I done extensive research before purchasing it because of the price. I believe it has a capacity of cleaning about 10=15000 gallons of water. You wont soon run out of water with this setup. Also learned that by putting a coffee filter on the bulb at the end of the hose helps keep out larger unwanted particles of junk out of the filter thereby making it last longer. I haven't used it yet but it looks very well made unlike a lot of the plastic water purifiers out on the market. Remember when out in the field water is a must and you break a piece of plastic and well---- ur done!

Good point & insight! And thanks for the tip on the coffee filter... the Katadyn will likely be my choice.

I spend more time up in the mountains and backcountry in 1 year than most folks do in a lifetime. I currently only carry the katadyn. Be sure to get some of the small tubes of silicone with it along with spare inserts. There is a big difference between a "filter" and a "purifier".

Clean water is so important to me that I have several stashed in verrying places.

He made a very to the point statement- "for you folks that don't leave the cities much, understand that you need one of these filters. Out in the woods the trees don't have spigots on them."

lol, that's funny! And though I do live in the suburbs, we are very close to many natural flowing springs (thankfully!)... so aquiring water will not be that difficult, but making sure it's potable is a whole different issue. I will make sure mine is!

Yes.

Katadyn bought out "Pur" around the turn of the century. I was very disappointed in this cause I had railed against chemical based filters for years because of cost per gallon (see above) the fact that no one really had spent YEARS ingesting those small amounts of chemicals to see what affect it would have on your body long term.

Needing it for occasional hiking and for day to day survival long term are too different things.

We don't own a single chemical based filter. Closest thing would be the purification tabs that are backups to Pocket and Mini Fitlers that are in everyone's gear.
