  • Sound Discipline in winter clothing? Is it possible?

As I was bundled up in this pre-snow, 20 degree weather, a thought hit me as I was swoosh-swooshing around... Nylon winter clothes and jackets are wonderful outdoor gear, all waterproof and with Goretex, but this stuff is LOUD!!!! And when snow falls and all the wilderness world gets quiet except for creaks and snapping branches, this nylon gear to me sounds DEAFENING... I think someone a 100 yards away could here me coming clearly...

I also have a US military white nylon snow parka and pants cover for ninja snow work, and that too is LOUD with its swoosh, swoosh the nylon makes...

I wonder how one can quiet down their winter / snow patrol or bugout gear....

Duck canvas is tough and quieter, but you loose the waterproofness. Old cowboy jackets were oil-impregnated duck canvas, I wonder how that oil treatment would work on old-school USGI cotton winter jackets and pants?

Or am I just making something a problem that is not a problem?

Noises like that always seem louder to those using or wearing the stuff than it does even 10 feet away.

I once did a random tape recording of various sounds at various intervals on a tape. Record a Low cough, fast forward a bit, then record a metal on metal sound, fast forward a bit then a zipper being pulled quickly, fast forward a bit record AK safety- you get the picture.

This was placed out in the middle of an open field and a handful of people observed the area while the tape played. They didn't know the tape was playing. They weren't 50 yards from the tape player, it was o dark thirty in the middle of no where. There was little background sound.

Few heard any of the sounds, only one remotely could narrow down the direction of the sound.
Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"

Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"

Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Surplus Euro gear is mostly cotton and avoids the swooshy sounds. Lotsa Flektarn is showing up, and the German gear is quality stuff... Don't forget to silence the gear and canteens... Regards, Templar

Good test results 1Admin... We will have 4-8 inches of snow tomorrow and it looks like I will be off too, so I see a test forming in my firing dendrites.... :-)

            1. It affects your hearing more so than someone hearing you.

            2. If your having to wear such clothing, then others will be as well. See point 1. :)

Yeah, I did some basic tests while shoveling snow yesterday and walking around the property. Ambient noises are louder than one thinks until you focus on them, and I could not hear any approaching nylon winter gear wearing person above this ambient noises. Only until they were close could I hear the swoosh-swoosh.

The crunch-crunch of the steps in the snow was far louder than the swoosh-swoosh of the nylon outer gear.... All those are technical, scientific terms, BTW...

But it does add noise to the person wearing it...

Much to do about nothing, it seems....

When hunting I found..that most noises out past x feet you don't here (sans steps...twigs snapping etc) ....now add wind direction ...temp /humidity and some noises travel far. I'm a senses person...id sit in a stand and go ocd because I could hear a lizard crawling on the next tree....but that's just me.LOL. other times id hear a twig look down and four deer would be staring back at me...LOL

Fleece winter wear is dead quiet in the winter!!!. Several companies make all kinds of camo gear out of it. Brushed cotton is also good. The old wool hunting gear outer cover is quiet. a thin layer over insulated part should do it. Real flannel should work. Layer style. My unit in Vietnam ditched the issue camo and had local people make brushed cotton camo.
