I moved recently and can now store fuel again. I have begun collecting gas cans again (i'll be repoing some of them this weekend) but in the mean time it means scrounging some new ones for my collection.
Yesterday am I am out walking the early warning system when I spot in the neighbors trash a smashed to all hell blitz gas can. I think "what the hay I'll grab it"
So I did. now this poor can looked like it had been run over by a truck. it was covered in black grime and every side was smashed and creased. On my way home from work I picked up some supplies for it.
1st thing i did was dump out what little gas was in it. Next I washed it. then I filled it with water to purge all the gas fumes. ALWAYS PURGE A FUEL CAN BEFORE WORKING ON IT!!!.
What I did next was apply science. I drilled a hole in the can and using a coat hanger wire guided and then pulled into the hole a tire valve stem. Now we've seen that mod before it becomes a cheap solvent proof vent. Then I put the valve back in. then I capped the can......
and hooked up my car tire inflater. a few psi later my can looked like a red ballon with most of the dents out of it. 3 creases remained and a gental use of the heat gun with the can was under pressure rolled out the creases. now the can is ready for action again. lastly I took the valve out the stem.
got a free gas can and all it cost me was a little time.
