Recently did a fair amount of ground fighting while in fighting gear. Smacking each other with rifles, fighting for grip on pistol and training knives, etc.
It used to be my "habit" of firmly attaching pouches, etc. with both the MOLLE straps as well as electrical ties.
I got out of that habit.
I'm now back into that habit....
By the third five minute round of rolling around on the dirt fighting for control of knife, pistol, rifle, there wasn't anything that was just attached using the MOLLE straps and snaps still attached to my chest rig.
11" thin black cable ties aka electrical ties weaved through the MOLLE attachment points, pulled tight and the end sniped off, goes a long way towards ensuring your pouches won't end up leaving your vest or plate carrier.
Also, I discussed it previously in the videos I did regarding shooting from the ground but it's an important point to bring back up-
Be able to access your backup weapon (pistol) easily from the ground.
If CCW'ing during a normal every day context, this may mean appendix carry in the front. No it won't knock you in the bean bag unless you have a Rick Grimes size revolver.
When you are on your back and the arms have to go to the side to access a weapon- be it a knife or pistol- it makes it extremely easy to pin the arm down, do any number of arm and shoulder locks, etc. That being said, you CAN still access your weapon on your side or hip but some movement is usually involved.
It doesn't matter if you have any ground experience or not. It doesn't take the mind long to go "WEAPON!" and bring all attention to the weapon in order to disarm or control it.
Here is where good technique to sweep, get a reversal, go "hands on" first can help.
