  • Baofeng UV5R+ Radio

Hey all, I was watching some youtube videos about caching gear off property either at a relitives or friends place, storage unit, work, etc. To help protect extra gear you may have from natural disasters... fire, flood, tornado, etc and also looting or breakins etc.
In the cache the videos were recommending a rifle, pistol, knife, the ammo, magazines, holsters, vests or carriers, spare clothing, boots, hat, belt, food, personal hygiene, communication, lighting, batteries, and a few other odds and ends.

On the communication end they recommended an AM/FM/SW radio. and a Ham radio. The radio he used in his cache was an Baofeng UV5R+ This was just for the cache not his main HAM.

I am thinking of doing this my self. I am not HAM licenced "YET!!" I will get a good radio once I get licenced or just before... but for the price of the Baofeng I could buy a couple now to put in and emergency stash cache and some buried caches as well.

How bad?/good? are these radios? I have no earthly clue on this and they would be backups not mains.

Recommend the UV-5RE. Seems to be what folks have standardized on.
Get the AA battery adapter so you can use normal batteries in addition to the original lithium.
Also get one(1) usb programming cable. One will do for all of your radios.
Programming software is free on the net.

Put your radios on GMRS or some such but find your local hams freqs as well and listen in until you actually get a license.

    I go to http://www.409shop.com
They're in HK and they've always treated me really well.

Well I saw this post to late, my UV5R+ is in route now. I would recommend 2 usb programming cables, 2 is 1 and 1 is none.

I found out about Baofeng UV5R from 1Admin on the post for the wireless seismic sensors. I saw the 5R+ and went with it vs the 5R. The price seemed worth it even if it was a POC.
