The idea of carrying a fishing kit is not suitable to some folks and I understand geographical location and abilities plays into this. I have carried a kit like this since a child and my Dad carried something similar on arrowhead hunts and trail hikes etc. Mine is a small tin with just enough to catch a small trout, perch or maybe a small catfish it aint made for marlin and tuna to feed the masses! The kit also has multiple uses.

Once the line is run over the open tin and the lid is shut with only items that rattle and make noise left in it the kit can be hung as a trip line rattle alarm for security so you can get some shuteye.

The line and hooks can also be used to sew either people or clothes in an emergency.

Nice kit, fishing line has lots of uses. I have a small mesh gill net in my GHB along with some fishing line & hooks.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I too use a mid-80's era USGI nylon fish net that rolls up into the size of a pool cue ball... Big enough to stretch across a stream and snag anything that goes by... Much easier than fishing, IMO... I guess I just don't know how to jiggle my worm the right way... ;)

Stringing a net across a stream in VA is illegal... So officially I have never caught anything with it. Educationally speaking only, the net doesn't do so well in lakes. Much better tied between banks across a stream... Will snap a shot next time I test it for educational purposes only, but may have to add a hook and line to the jaw... :-)

I've used a net in a pond by placing it in a half moon shape near shore and baiting the inner or shallow side. I caught several blue gill, although one was partial eaten the next morning.

Rmpl - my apologies, I was asking MIO but I failed to specify whom I was asking.
