  • Yo - Yo fishing reels

I know its the lazy way of fishing but they allow you to do other things while they do all the work.

This is the cheapest place that I found them at:

I paid $17.65/dozen and $6.99 S & H (to IL). Unfortunately I just check the site and they are out of stock. ebay can't even come close to this price. This is just another tool that could be used. The site also sells an easy to replicate turtle trap.

I guess it should go without saying, but you should check all your local DNR regs before using them.

I have never tried them, but have heard good things. I have used plastic jugs fishing doing the same type of thing. Have materials necessary to make a trot line, if it becomes legal in my state. A good way (as you said) to get fish (food) while you are doing something else.

Trot lining, jug lining and limb lining are great ways to get fish with a minimal amount of exposure. I have trot lined for years with great results. Even some of the fish that are caught but not wanted can be used for bait on the lines when chopped up.
As eeyore stated check your laws first but as with gardening try not to wait till it happens to start this and get some experience under your belt.

Don't forget about a gill net, while illegal now in most states, because it's to effective, it would be a great 'stealth' method of fishing in an emergency.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

I am NOT condoning the breaking of the law however if you find yourself in a bad place all the above mention are just as effective on small game and turkey. I had never thought of that till an aquaintance of mine got a heafty fine for catching tukey on a knee high trot line baited with corn. For survival purposes it is quiet and allows minimal exposure. Again do NOT go breaking the law but stick this in your memory banks.

Now that sounds like something someone would do from my neck of the woods. I have never used a trout line nor bank poles but I have used the Yo-Yo reels and there are pretty easy to secure and set, easier than some mouse traps in my opinion.

I have ten yo-yos and set them out ocassionally just for the fun of it. They're productive and that's all I care about. If they're illegal now where anyone here happens to be, after TSHTF, who cares? The game wardens will be too busy trapping fish & little furry critters to care about what anyone else will be doing.

Hahaha this shoulda been the easiest question in the world for me because I have jug, limb and trot lined since I was kneehigh to a grasshopper in every major water body in SE and Central Oklahoma but I can't remember the sizes. I just walk in see them and buy a few hundred. I took a pic of what I use, I wanna say 1/0 or 2/0. These are mainly used to catch cats, buffaloe, drum, carp and gar, the goal is usually cats but these other edible pests will always show up, so it will depend on the size fish you have in your area as to what you need.

Thanks, I really appreciate your response! I just ordered a 12-pack of YoYo's off e-bay, so I guess I'll take a trip to Wal-mart to pick up some circle hooks. I know what you mean though... I've fished my whole life and always just walk in and pick what I feel is best for what I'll be fishing for. I never remember the sizes either. lol
