My family is traveling by air from Florida to Seattle in November. We are checking bags. We will probably do some day hikes on famous mountains in Oregon and Washington states. Within reason, what survival type stuff would you bring for a trip like that? Pretend you're packing your bag for a week. Guns? Axe? Machete? Tent or tarp? How nuts do you go?

GMHB, CCWs and EDC which will get me thru 3 days without any issues and with some resupply items for food that is eaten etc in the suitcase. Maybe try and establish a contact in that area in case in goes south while you are there IF you can convince them you are worthy because you would be showing up with very little but skills and knowledge.
dunno about the heights and terrain you are tackling but look at climbing items if needed and research stores in the area that sells things we might deem neededKnowledge is Power, Practiced Knowledge is Strength, Tested Knowledge is Confidence

Yep, to your hotel room or wherever you'll first arrive. Call the hotel, tell them to expect your shipment and the day to expect it and to hold it for you at the front.Originally posted by Spock View PostUPS your gear to yourself.
Done that dozens of times over the years.Boris- "He's famous, has picture on three dollar bill!"
Rocky- "Wow! I've never even seen a three dollar bill!"
Boris- "Is it my fault you're poor?"

Back in the '70s a bunch of us used to "play" on Mt. Hood. Ignorance was bliss, 'cause people who know what they are doing die up there every year. The Cascades are rugged terrain so lean on first aid supplies and groceries and warmth. Remember that, above a certain altitude, helicopter rescue gets dicey. If rescuers have to walk, or sled, in, you could be there a while. $0.02When the woman at the door screeched, "Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms!" I, naturally, assumed it was a delivery....

You dont have a car and not know how to drive it do you? Having the tools for the job is worthless with out the knowledge of how to use it!

I took my pack with me to Maryland last fall for work. Thought I would get some Shenandoah/ Appalachian time in but didnt. I rode with someone up there but had to fly back. I had about 80lbs plus my pistol and a box of ammo. Shipped it back from Maryland to GA for $85 and that was with me buying the biggest box they offered. Saw it in 2 days.
Used to drive one way to California when I was younger and always shipped my stuff home. Was around $125-150 from LA to GA back then. You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

More than 3 ways to make fire. I hear it's always rainy up there and moist. Maybe some good dry tinder already bundled.Originally posted by WILL View PostI could use some advice here folks. So far I got pancho/tarp, thanks. Everyone else got side tracked.
Make sure your tent floor is sealed good with that wet ground. I know my cheapo sweats through the
material especially the floor if the ground is wet. Started double tarping underneath and spraying water proofer on it times 3
Now I am in a hammock so it doesn't matter as much. You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I grew up in Seattle. If you plan on hiking, I would highly recommend a pair of waterproof hiking boots. In November it is almost guaranteed to be wet and cold. Especially if you are from Florida. Expect daytime highs about 50-60 with the nights closer to just above freezing depending on altitude. Plan to stay warm and dry.

That is a wicked cool idea..........Nice!Originally posted by Spock View PostUPS your gear to yourself."One cannot but ponder the question: what if the Arabs had been Christians? To me it seems certain that the fatalistic teachings of Mohammed and the utter degradation of women is the outstanding cause for the arrested development of the Arab. He is exactly what he was around the year 700, while we have kept on developing. Here, I think, is a text for some eloquent sermon on the virtues of Christianity." - General George S. Patton, diary, June 9, 1943.
