  • Product review of the "Grizzly H7775 CAST IRON CORN/GRAIN MILL"

I bought the Grizzly H7775 corn meal on Amazon last week and I thought some of you might like to know my reaction. I own a country living grain mill that is hard to beat, but I bought this mill to grind popcorn, beans and other large seeds because it's a lot cheaper than buying an attachment for my expensive mill.

    Pros:
It's fast! This thing tears up pinto beans faster than anything I have ever used. No need for a motor.
It's sturdy. It looks like it will last forever. The grinding plates are fairly coarse, serrated cast iron.
It's cheap. At 24 dollars (roughly), this mill is hard to beat. If you don't have a mill already and can't afford to lay down a lot of money, this is a great choice. It gets the job done.

    Cons:
It makes a course meal rather than a flour. If you want cake flour, look elsewhere. If you want to tear up grains and beans to make them easier to cook (or want to make cornmeal), this mill is a winner.

Did you find the smell to be bad when you opened the package? I noticed a lot of the reviews mentioned this and the fact that the grinding plate was not straight and there were gaps when it goes around?

I saw a lot of bad reviews as well. I wonder if a lot of people thought they were buying a $100 grinder for $25. That's a common fault with consumers.

Oftentimes, with products like this, it's a crapshoot as to whether any individual unit will function as well as advertised. It might be worth the risk though.

Thanks for the review, BigJohn. I'd not even heard of this before.

Oh I wouldn't mind having one even if it didn't work perfectly but the smell part worried me.

I think maybe the smell part is something to do with the origin. I have bought stuff from Harbor Freight (admit it, you have too) that smelled like they packed a dead rat in with it. I don't know if it the paint, the lube or the packing material. After some time in fresh, American air they smell fine.

You ain't kidding brother! We were down in the "big city" last weekend and we stopped at one so I could get a first hand look at some of their solar panel 'kits.' They turned out to be worse than I had expected. However the wife mentioned the smell of the place really early on.

I said "I wonder if CHINA smells like this?" I always kinda figured it would smell like sweet and sour chicken... ;) LOL
