actually the mil is starting to move to lighter "backpacking" style/desiigned gear for the reason that gear is to heavy. They have shown how much lower exterm. injuries guys are getting from humping xx lbs with crappy boots and bags etc.

there was a good article about it year or so back when parts of the 10th mnt. i think in Astan were getting multicam with merrel switch back boots,, marmot sleeping bags and other light weight gear for T and E....
Hey Petunia...you dropped your man pad!

Actually Donweld, I have found that a breathable raincoat is probably my most important piece of survival gear when I am backpacking and climbing mountains. I was hovering on the verge of hypothermia for two days because of a very cold and wet storm that came through in the middle of summer. I had an inefficient sleeping bag for the cold snap. BUT because I got soaked and had no way to dry out for two days, I shivered for two whole days! A better sleeping bag would have been really nice to have... But not getting wet in the first pace would have been even better!
DO NOT go cheap on a rain coat! They are the most important piece of gear in a mountain climbers setup. Imho.
