Maybe a 40cal., so friggin frustrated with the Taurus PT907 (the 9mm slim). Bought it new and had every issue you could think of--crazy FTF, FTE, Stovepipe. So I sent it back to Taurus and they found that it had a cracked slide/manufacturer's defect- they did replace the slide. got it back and now I have issues with failure to feed- ammo just doesn't want to climb the ramp. I know what you're thinking and yes, my magazines are factory Taurus mags. I'm sending it back again. I can't have something this unreliable. Now I know why I gravitate back to my 38 or 357- but I do want a semi.what brand 40cal do you find reliable. Also thinking of a 223 for a long gun- right now the only thing I have that's long is a bow,lol

I have a S&W 4006TSW. Its an old 1st gen model but this joker is very reliable. Never jammed. I have dropped it numerous times on concrete. Knocking on wood, but this joker is solid. Hardly no recoil. And if it ran out of bullets you could beat half of Mongolia with it.You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I like em, I just couldnt own one, yet. My friend has I think its a 23, sub compact .45, correct me if I am wrong here. But it feels like a water pistol to me, so does the G17. Even though they are fun to shoot, I love the one I have and the Springfield XDM .40.Originally posted by boltgun308 View PostGlock, period. You know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?

I <3 my Colt .45. It isn't stock though, it was customized by Wilson Combat. If you have the $$$$ Nighthawk Custom or Wilson Combat make some amazing guns.
I am not a fan of Glocks. I have a lot of problems with stove pipes and jams. I KNOW the problem is how I hold the gun. :( But I never have any problems w/ my Colt. The only time it ever jammed was in training - when we set it up to jam.
ETA: And I can't use poor quality ammo.Last edited by MustangGal; 01-13-2012, 07:25 AM.

I have seen three people try to use a .40 with reloaded ammo, and all three were having problems. I've asked around, and for some reason the .40 doesn't like reloads. I was at the range one day and there was a guy there with a Springfield .40 and it seemed like every third shot was a jam, and I'm talking about a "take the gun apart to clear it" type jam. You might want to check into that a bit more. A .45 isn't that much different, and they've been making 1911's for long enough that you can find one that works consistently at a fairly reasonable price. I just bought a Rock Island 1911 compact. It's made in the Philippines, where apparently they bought the U.S. Govt.'s molds or something. The parts are interchangeable with a Colt. Before I bought it I read the reviews, and I didn't find a bad one. The compact retail for just over $400, and the full sized are about $375. They only come with one magazine, though.

The Ruger SR40 is a decently priced option to try. Full 15 rounds of .40 and a slimmer design. I've not got a whole lot of experience with mine just yet, but works well enough so far.
The only problem right now is getting spare high cap mags. Nobody seems to have them in stock and are backordered.Experience is a cruel teacher, gives the exam first and then the lesson.

I'm very happy with my Springfield Armory XD40. Minimal recoil, good accuracy, good capacity. However, I quoted Bearman because I have experienced the same problem. A family member gave me a hundred rounds or so of .40cal reloads and I had a minimum 50% failure to feed ratio. I was fortunate not to have to dissemble the gun to clear the problem, just had to "tap and rack" and was ready to go.Originally posted by Bearman202 View PostI have seen three people try to use a .40 with reloaded ammo, and all three were having problems. Feed it factory ammo, an it shoots like a dream.

Okay, I'm going to take a different approach to this question, as there are many good semi auto pistols out there.
What size hands do you have?
Do you shoot right or left handed?
Have you ever shot a .40?
If you are in a group or have mutual aid (neighbors) that shoot, what do they shoot? This may be important if TSHTF and you need to "share" ammo for self defense.
How easy is a particular weapon to field strip?
What does your local Law Enforcement use, as there will usually be plenty of this ammo in your AO.
Having answered those questions, you may be able to narrow down your choices.
As for me, I own Glocks. They are easy to field strip, very reliable and extremely durable. Five years ago I would have never thought I would have owned one, but now I don't think I'll own anything else. Do a web search for Glock 21 torture test and read that story. It made a believer out of me. I now own a model 19 and 23 and someday I hope to have a model 26. The 19 is a 9mm and the 23 a .40cal. These are the exact same frame. I then purchased the Lone Wolf 9mm barrel that will fit into my .40 and purchased extra 9mm magazines. Now I have the ability to change my .40 into a 9mm. I have done this many times and it fires flawlessly. Another interesting thing, I can use Glock .357 sig magazines for .40cal without any problems. I only have a couple of these that I picked up on sale somewhere and have used them more than once.
Like I said at the beginning, there are many fine manufacturers of pistols and revolvers. If you know someone that has Glocks, try it. If you can try the others then do that as well. You need to have a reliable weapon...your life may depend on it.
I hope that helped......

The only time mine jams is when I am jammin out to Slipknot or Mastodon whilst I shoot it :)Originally posted by Edgemont View PostI have the same as wiseowl... S&w 4006 .40 cal. I highly recommend it. I bought two boxes of reloads at a gun show and had ZERO problems. Haven't tried any other reloads though. So 40 cal jams is news to meYou know what ol' Jack Burton always says at a time like this?
