  • Durable yet Affordable Rain Gear?

One thing my B.O.B. is missing is Protection from the Wet (Rain or wet snow). One of the primary reasons is I have not found something affordable.

    Requirements would be

#1. Durable (must last many many uses)
#2. Breathable (walking/hiking can work up a sweat)
#3. Cost (must not cost me my left arm)

Gen 1 ECWS Woodland Camo pants and top can often be find pretty affordably and are durable. Not the lightest or most compact option out there, but works.

Also West German Gore Tex pants are available as surplus from places like CTD or Sg sometimes. I hear they are good. And are OD color I believe.

I bought a pair of frog togs to use on my motorcycle for $60 and have found myself taking them when I go camping

not that the guy from the Sonoran desert is the best expert on rain gear

Their light and work well - I was thinking of buying a second pair

Frog Toggs don't really breath that well and you can end up getting wetter when you start moving around.

Gore-Tex or Texapore is the way to go for waterproofing. But it's going to cost a pretty penny depending on the manufacturer. Unless you were specifically looking for camo patterns, I would suggest the Marmot Precip jacket in black. I haven't seen a review yet of anyone that didn't like it.

The other suggestion would be to keep an eye on steep and cheap. They tend to run some pretty good sales on waterproof gear, although you have to snatch it up quick.

RedLedge. Light weight, layers well for multi season use, takes up very little space. Price is very affordable, especially compared to some of the other choices on the market. My right hand brother turned me on to them and I love them. I'll try to get a pic up tomorrow. They have a nice brownish color that works really well with woodland MARPAT and Coyote (my #1 and #2 favorites), as well as other colors/patterns.

            Looking forward to the pic.

Thanks for the help guys! Thanks for pointing me down the right path!

Well after lots of searching I finally decided on German Surplus Gore Tex... I hope the size is large enough for my Large FAT frame. I picked up Jacket and Pants for less than 50.00 after shipping. I hope that they are quality!

Guys thanks for all the suggestions... All were great and made purchasing a difficult choice.

I would like to give an update:

So I picked up some German Surplus Wet Weather "Goretex" Suit. (Not sure if I can place a link here so just google search "German Gore tex") The Jacket and Pants together were only $35.00. These have no lining so they are the simple shell. This is how ever what I wanted, something big enough to wear a sweater or softshell jacket under if it is cold but light enough to work in the summer too. The quality so far seems to be "Simple" but top notch (ie no extras but quality).

The suit I recieved looked brand new but the zip on the jacket was a little "worn" at the starting point and it really should be replaced, a simple 3 to 4 dollar replacement. So after shipping a new zipper I have a total of about $48.00 in a Gore tex (actually it is a german brand of laminated materials similar to gore tex) rain suit, not a bad deal, atleast so far.

I finally had a chance to wear the jacket this morning and it worked as desired.
