still have a large alice pack (mountain ruck) as my b.o.b the only upgrades that I have done were adding padded straps. works fine for me but if it gets over 70 pounds out comes the REI pack but there isnt much in the way of tactical or any "blending in" capabilities there.

LD I have 2 packs, one med. and the other a large. The only change I made was to change the belt for a padded one. Now they ride on the hips and much easier to use. Both have the steel frames. If its not broken dont fix it.:)KNOW YOUR RULES OF ENGAGEMENTS AND LIVE BY THEM !

I have 3 of the Large Alice Pack with frame. I too have been unable to get away from them. They just work for me as far as a large pack goes. I place my smaller GHB pack (Camelback or Hydrastorm) on top of the Alice secured by the main straps so I can access the hydration bladder. When I get where I'm going I shed the heavy thing and use it to resupply my GHB.
