today when i went out to pick up dog food i made it a point to grab a handfull of extra chow that i can use to start my emergency food supply. my goal is to slowly but surely start building it up. right now i have enough food for a few days for my fiance and i(for around ten extra bucks on a random trip to the grocery store). i figure if i just grab a couple of things each time i hit the grocery store i can gradually build this to a months worth of food in a pretty short time and do it on the cheap. (dead horse, not rich). i have a little hexagon table that we just had some old junk cables and papers in, so i cleaned it out and am now using it as my emergency food supply depot. i dont want to store the stuff in my garage because it gets really hot in the summer and really (really really effin) cold in the winter. this little hex table is in my living room and no one ever really looks twice at it. anyways, takin some baby-steps here, feels good. pic attached.

oh, btw, in the ziplock bag is some leftover "boil in bag" rice that we didnt really care for, it was just taking up space in the cabinet. but when your down to emergency rations, taste really isnt a huge factor. so i took it out of the box to save space, tossed it in a ziplock, noted the exp. date, and some quick instructions (im not much of a cook, need all the help i can get) and stored it.

When the light finally came on for me, I was a little stressed about what I didn't have - seemed like a mountain to climb with limited funds. But like you I started buying a little extra each week and was seeing real progress quickly. Now I'm stressed about where to store it - the spare/ sewing/ office room is getting crowded ( man I wish I had a basement) !! Soon you'll be sending us a picture of your cram packed shelf storage units!!

Good job on getting started. Don't forget to have some of way of cooking the food you have stored. I think that it's important to store food that you like to eat. Set samll goals food for a week, then a month etc. Good luck.Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

Good job and way to go everyone ! Just keep adding to your supplies. Buy bottled water if nothing else, reuse plastic 2 lt. pop bottles or reuse barrels from some source (CLEAN them, soap-water-bleach solution-rinse good). Our local stores are selling cases of selected food items (much cheaper then single cans) maybe yours also. Maybe you should think about home canning (can be a lot of money up front but you reuse all the items over and over except the lids). Got to have water and you've got to have food, but keep an open mind. You need your meds, a first aid kit, bathroom items,lights-batteries etc. etc.; baby steps, dont go broke doing this but just do it ! Check out the chain stores or big box stores (name brand stuff co$t !) Got to go, good luck and keep prepping."Well, you know what they say: 'Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgment. '"

Hit the stores when the ads come out. Shop at Costco or Sam's Club. A few extra bucks spent each time you go grocery shopping will build up your food preps fairly quickly. Don't forget water, meds, self defense stuff, chow for the doggies. Lots of people forget about the last one. Since they are part of the family, they get preps too.

Hit or miss, i hear ya on the basement thing. my house doesnt have one either, (which is absolutely friggin insane here in tornado ally). its a two bedroom house with a good sized back yard, but.... no flippin basement... and ex121, i figure that if it comes down to it i have some stacked wood in the back yard that i can just throw in my grill and start a fire. cook on that. not ideal i know, but the potential collapse of society isn't ideal either. gotta do what you gotta do.... oh, and as far as water is concerned, believe me, its on the top of my priority list for the next trip out. (if anything i should have bought it first). and first aid and weapons and such that some of you mentioned, they need some improvements but i have the basic stuff. i was just highlighting my food supply. i have a HUGE list of stuff i still need to cover the rest of the essentials (yes, i sat down and made a list). good job everyone else who recently got started too. just by implementing the survivalist/prepper mindset you improved you and your family's odds of survival exponentially. and every little thing you do as a result will keep those odds moving upwards. keep it up folks! its not all doom and gloom in here: its HOPE!
