BOB Question

Okay ya'll- this may seem like a question with a very straightforward answer, so I'll try to explain my thinking behind the question. I have a very nice, and somewhat pricy, pair of thermals. I want to put them in my BOB, but I know that I will also want to use them this fall/winter when I'm working/playing outside. So, what do you all suggest? Should I keep them in my BOB and take them out of there when needed, or should I keep them in the house, and put them in my BOB if needed. I know I should just get two pairs, but they are expensive and I just think that the money could be better spent elsewhere right now.

Any advice/constructive criticism is welcome!

The obvious answer would be to buy a second set, but I can appreciate the money situation.

There is no good answer that fits your predicament besides this. Honestly? Pack what you wear in your BOB and wear what you pack in your BOB. Make sense? Kind of like storing foods. Eat what you store and store what you eat.

Personally, the decision is yours, but I would recommend getting a spare set and stowing them. Or finding a cheaper alternative to what you are wearing. Might not be what you want to hear, but that's my advice.

Dito on what Grand says. It's early yet so maybe save that for another week later in the year and then buy them. What are the odds you will have them on when/if you bug? Pretty good unless you are asleep. Maybe buy some cheapies for now since it's important for your local weather, better than nothing IMO

I agree with all the above for mentioned...... get another pair. Remember, 2 is 1, 1 is none.

This purchase may end up saving your life. I do understand how money is tight these days, but good gear in a time of need makes you way up on the list to survive.

There are quality thermals out there that don't break the bank....worst case buy a bunch of cheap thermals and put 2 sets in your BOB...cause 2 is 1 and 1 is none. Put the good thermals on your wish list for Christmas and maybe Santa will bring you a pair. I have been putting the prepping books I want on my Christmas list. Next one on my list is "the secure home"!!

Thanks guys! I appreciate the honest feedback. I suppose I'm just going to have to break down and add another pair to my preps. Those suckers are expensive....but I hate to be cold!

it sucks trust me. As when i was building my kits i had and still have similar delimas.

I started by putting lesser grade stuff in.

For example. thermals.

BOB had old school thermal long johns...i used my good poly pros when backpacking and hunting.....
eventually it got to where i had spare sets for both and have them set aside for both. The old school thermals now get used around the house,,etc and the good stuff is in my kits.

My issue is that i use my BOB as my backpacking kit. 85% of whats it my BOB is also on my back when i hike. I keep the weapons support and heavy medical stuff out.
This means my meals, gear etc get used, rotated, inspected at minumum 3 times a year....It also helps learn your gear and yoruself. No sense of having a fancy pack to sit and collect dust waiting for zombies.......

Wow this is a tough subject to think about in 100+ heat 40 days and counting - LOL! But that's what it's all about planing and prepping for our future!

Okay, I've decided to just bite the bullet and get another pair. I'm definitely going to do as elittle suggested and put another nice set of thermals on my x-mas list, but I'm going to go with a cheaper pair for my BOB for now.

Buying a second set is the best answer; however, if something happens and it is winter when you need them, I am guessing you will probably be wearing them? So, they should be with you as you grab your BOB.

I, like Protus, use my BOB also as my hiking/camping pack. my wifes BOB always sits there and never gets used. my BOB get's rotated and used. I keep the stuff in my BOB, if I need it for the weekend, I take it out and use it. As soon as I get home, I put it back (or wash it and put it back) in my BOB immediately. It would be nice to have double of a lot of things, but $ is something you have to think about, as do I

Grand is right on this too. Better to have 2 of things then packing and unpacking your BOB. You will need your BOB right when your stuff is in the wash.:)
