  • EMP attack or natural Solar flares protection

If we experience an EMP from an attack or natural solar flares will electrical equipment (survival gear) such as emergencey radio and two way radios be protected if stored in an steel cabinet like this (see photo) as long as they don't come in contact with the metal. It is sitting dirctly on a concrete slab. Do I need to ground it in some additional way? I have read that a metal cabinet or desk will act as a Faraday cage...anybody have any intel on this

Thats the theory but i have no evidence. The only "test" I can think of is to see if you can transmit a signal out of it. if you can't then in theory it will be protected from stuff coming in. The way to transmit while inside a container since you cant fit is to get your kids mp3 player thingy and rubber band the transmit button on a radio or dial out on a cell phone to another, close the container tight and see if you can hear the signal playing the music on the other device. Again just my theory because i dunno squat for real, just a redneck gettin'er done

Based on my limited and basic information, you need to make sure that there are no openings. I've seen and read alot of material online that makes it seem a lot easier than I thought it would be. As long as you dont have any open or uncovered seams, a metal cabinet should work.

However, if there are loose screws etc.., that might be something to think about.

I am using a simple ammo can and brand new metal trash can.

I have no doubt what an EMP blast can do (albeit some confusion on the full extent of what it will damage)....my only contention is how do you know what you have setup will work?

I probably need to finish reading the EMP report that Forstchen wrote for Congress.

If you have (or can obtain) an old, non functioning microwave, store your smaller items (radios, etc...) inside the microwave. Be sure to cut the power cord off the unit just to ensure nobody accidentally "nukes" your stuff!

Wonder if I ran that metal A/C tape down the crack between the doors?

Ground it. That pulse needs to go somewhere, instead of build up on your cage. Think static electricity, which will also ruin electronics. You might also want to insulate your electronics from the cage itself. Some plywood, thicknesses of cardboard, even a mat of non-static rubber will do the job.
