  • My Survival Fanny Pack

Ok, this is my first time doing this so here we go................

I modeled this after the one Cody Lundin uses and describes in his book 98.6 Degrees. I have added my own touch to it and the only thing not pictured is my Galco shoulder holster for the S&W .40, which goes along with this set up ( just didn't want to go back in the bedroom, wife is getting newborn to go to sleep and didn't want to disturb)

I am looking for thoughts and constructive criticism. I do not have anything for water filtration, i.e. tablets or Steri-Pen because I can boil water in water bottles and have done so successfully. I am looking to add a Stainless Steel Water Bottle in the near future.

    Weight is about 5lbs

Whats funny is I actually have plenty of room for a few. Been meaning to buy some. I know I can go a couple days without eating if I had to, but its not a bad idea to add them.
      Thanks Matt

I used to carry one very like that, then started adding stuff. But I think I need to get back to a simple everyday carry bag. Good job.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

That's a well thought out kit. Only thing I would add is a 5x8 silnylon tarp. The are small (about the same size and weight as the bandana when folded) and give you sun/rain protection and you can also use it to collect rain water in a pinch.

Man, I can't. Seriously if i am where I am using handwarmers and blankets and in extreme temps in either direction I really can't make it and continue to function well after 1 full 24 hr day. The cold side I get because i'm burning calories to stay warm but the hot side i dont really understand but it seems I burn through alot too. Maybe it's because i'm more active in the heat i dunno. I won't die but i'm pretty much worthless except to stay in a camp after that. Seems that I gotta have food, even if it's small amounts to be able to continue forging, collecting water, firewood etc.

I carry 2 empty fanny packs in my BOB. Figured if I had to abandon the main bag, at least I could carry essentials.

Good point about the food Matt. I always read about how long folks can go without food, but what they don't say is that you arn't very functional. the longest I have gone without is 3 days, just to see if I could and what would happen. when I did it was good weather on a weekend campout. I didn't do musch but sit around camp with a little bit of wood gathering, but at the end I was very tired. and it was hard to function mentally. I drank lots of water but it was hard not to think about eating.

The time I went without food to "test" myself, I had some sugar and salt packets in my pack. I poured em my water for a very nasty drink but it made me feel better. But that was for 2 days and when I came out of the woods I went to a country buffet. I also have "hibernation" snacks stored on my waistline...hahah. But if I had to really find food, I could, unless it was dead of winter, minus degrees, but it rarely gets like that down here, so I like my chances. Plus, with this pack being so light, I can move a helluva lot faster than with my backpack on. I actually go mountain biking with this on and my camelback. But Matt was right, I am going to add some of those energy bars, hell I have enough room for some small bags of rice or pasta if I wanted to..

As for the tarp, the solar blanket or the poncho can be used for shelter if needed. I could construct a lean to and patch it down with pine needle branches if need be.

Added to the "fanny" attack pack....

3 Clif Bars....Yummy White Chocolate Macadamia Nut!!! Nom Nom Nom
Map of my area. (even though I know it, still better to have it)
                        1 extra .40 magazine
iPod and headphones...(gotta be jammin to Tool or Rage as I am eluding, evading or escaping)
6 pack of headlamp batteries (never can have enough)
                        Salt and sugar packs
                        Few dollars in junk coins
                        Couple of packs of gum
Small travel sized pack of Tylenol, Benadryl and Aspirin....ooh and some Tum Ta Tum Tum Tuuuuuuums

The only drawback is when running, it kinda shifts side to side. But, it can be worn over the shoulder in that situation and I have connected (wrapped around) the upper mid section of my hiking bag and it fits perfectly. Overall, its a perfect to have when mountain biking or just going on a day hike. I have 2 backpacks as well and getting another for Christmas.

I just really like the fanny pack because when I wear my cut off sleeve Metallica shirt and my cut off blue jean shorts I look radical.....:)

Now, my buddy made himself one and followed the same blueprint, minus the shorts.

How about "wet wipes"? Kinda like you use with babies/children. I have seen them in small packs and they have a multitude of uses.

Oooooh good idea. We have PLENTY of the small travel packs....i do have some tissues in there but those wet wipes are a hikers best friend. I have a multitude of them in my hiking gear, need to pull out one of the smaller ones and add it.. Good suggestion sir. Would hate to have to raw dawg it....:P
