  • fishy fishy...fish trap how to

Well here is some how-to for you all.

My lil one got a turtle a week or more back. She also had a project to make something from recyclables.
We have family who has turtles etc and they will eat small fish. See where this is going.

Well. we made a minnow trap.
    This is what we used.
    2x 2 liter soda bottles
    1x pair of scissors
2ft of waxed twine( you can use what ever really )
    2x 3ft lengths of some 550 strand
    a lighter
a nail,or anything you wanna get hot.
super glue- i used it , but found the twine worked better on the plastic.

What you will do is take and cut the bottom off one of the 2 liters. Then you will cut the top off one as well. make it long enough to slip into the other( see pictures)
Then you heat up your nail, soldering iron etc and poke thru to weave your twine through. You will also need to poke some drain and fresh water holes in it.
I took the 550 strand and wrapped it under the neck of the 2 liter. This is how you retrieve it.
hint: you have to sink the trap. I held it under the nasty pond water till it filled up then tossed it out 3 ft from shore and waited.

for bait you can use anything.
Once we got it built, we went out with some bread chunks.
Needless to say, it didnt take long to fill up. In maybe 5 minutes we harvested 30+ minnows. We keep 12-13 for the turtle the others we released.
To make sure it wasnt dumb luck. Once "mom" got home, she was given a lesson by the lil one on how to catch the minnows. In the same time we caught just as many. She was impressed.
We now have two other people who buy feeder fish for their pets wanting to know how to make one to save money....
plus it was fun and a two fold learning experience for the family.

picture of minnows in the tank.....i think our turtle is a hippy,,he wont eat them yet:p

Made one last year but never really got a chance to try it out. I hope this year i can get a chance to try it. I wonder if the clear bottles makes a difference? I used green ones, guess i will try some clear ones.

That is cool, never seen that. Like a smaller, cheaper version of the perch trap. I saved it to my drive
