  • "Buy" money

I was thinking the other day, $100. isn't what it used to be. I need to increase the cash in each of the rucks and car BOB's to at least $250.00

With $3. a gallon gas and just the dollar tanking in general, $100. isn't much for "buy" money. Their is $20. in a quarter roll in each of them also and at least 5 ounces of silver as well.

I'm thinking $250. sounds like a good amount.

This is more than just gas money, this is there in case the opportunity to "buy" a ride (not directly home obviously) or a small bribe is needed.

What do you all have in your rucks/BOB's as far as money?

I don't carry much, my wife carries more. It's all I can afford at the time with her needing the most for whatever. My capabilities and skills are better to obtain what will be needed are better so she takes priority. I also carry more that could be used to barter in the event the dollar does collaspe.
If you don't mind me asking why the heavy rolls of quarters?

Versatility. In a vehicle, these could be used after leaving a contaminated area to use a coin operated car wash.

I'd rather leave the fallout, VX or Anthrax spores at the car wash after getting out of dodge than taking them back to the homestead ;)

It's obviously not an "always available" option, but it's an option.

hmmm interesting. I have been "vacinated" against Anthrax, what a booger it was, made me sick every time. I had planned on just not going back if contaminated and dying alone. I dunno maybe wrong thinking on my part but thats where I have always stood and in my position it has been a real threat though not a strong one, enough to make us plan and discuss it at work. VX, doubtful you will make it, thats some bad juju. Interesting theory though. I would use the strongest chemicals availible maybe the tire cleaner then soap with no rinse or wax or spot free(all to weak). Again interesting. Perhaps an old NBC NCO we know can chime in

The spores are the only real threat in that scenario, and simple wash with hot soapy water, followed by a mild bleach rinse, then a water flush (dont want bleach on too long, serious corrosive on all rubber and unsealed paint). Do NOT forget your PPE!!

Your nerve agents are a non threat unless you receive a direct hit (liquid actually hit your vehicle).

The BEST decontamination for vehicles is AIR IT OUT while the the vehicle is parked in DIRECT SUNLIGHT!! The UV from the sun breaks down gas nerve agent pretty darn fast, liquid (persistent agents) are pretty tough and you will need to do the bleach soap thing.

As I use to tell my Soldiers, the MOST important thing about NBC is AVOIDANCE!! It only takes one little slip up and it is lights out for good.
I use to dread when my commander would make me train them on MOPP gear exchange (90% of them would get themselves killed if they had to do it in a dirty environment)...

OH, in case you are wondering why I said mild bleach and not the "SuperTropicalBleach" we use in the military, civilian paint cant handle it, and it would literally peal off your vehicle paint. =)

Also, bleach is not necessary if you are doing radiation fallout cleaning...

I have $250.00 in cash. I also have some silver and gold for bribes. I learned from my sister, that during an emergency, money flies through your fingers. Today, it cost me over $55.00 to fill up my Ford Explorer. In a real societal breakdown emergency, there will be price gougers. I plan to increase my stash to $500.00 over the next few months. While the dollar may crash, in the initial breakdown, people will be unable to get it via the ATM or bank. That means that you may be able to use cash to better your situation. I know my sister got $500.00 out of the bank just before Hurricane Ivan, after 4 weeks of buying gas, food items, ice etc, etc she was terribly worried about running out of money. I keep a separate bank account at a national bank, so that when the lights go out in my own area, I can at least get money from another part of the state of country.

When debit card transactions do not work at the supermarket - watch out. When the debit card machines quit working for even a short time, and the patrons of the supermarket go nuts, if you have cash, there may be food or other useful items you can purchase, because most people don't keep enough cash to last a day.

good reply monkeybird... may I suggest "my" current barter item>>>> ALCOHOL>>>> you would be surprised what you can trade, many times people won't take money (as it is no longer good or hard to find someone else willing to take it) but they are DYING for a nice bottle of Jack or some fresh Vodka. (avoid beer, doesnt last long-from what I am told, and too bulky)

A lot depends on how far away from my AO I am. On a daily (work day) I try and have $100. If I am traveling, then it's more.

I'm like Sheepdog. If I'm traveling say to my BOL I keep more cash on me. If just around town not so much. I only keep $100 in my BOB but much more could be added from the safe.

I really like the idea of quarters for washing the vehicle, good tip, thats the kind of stuff I come here for.
