So I have 3 kids and a wife that need to bugout. For myself and the wife I have purchased (via craigslist for 60 bucks used twice) 2 kelty trekker backpacking packs. I have taken the pack on 2 trips so far and it is great. Over 4000 cu. in. of space in there, plus with some compression sacks added to top and bottom you can haul a ton of gear. Takes the weight great too! Wife's loadout is about 50 lbs, but she is a warrior and the pack makes it pretty easy for her to manage. I wanted to find something for the kids to use though. They aint helpless, so they can help too. Ages are 10, 8, and 3 (but as big as some 6yr olds I know). My 10 year old is a girl with size 8 shoes. She was just a little small for the wifes kelty. The frame hit her on the bottom of her rear end so that was a no go for sure. She carries a 20 lbs. pack to school everyday so I wanted to get her something with a frame to "help" her with the weight. I settled on an ALICE pack with frame. I remembered from my Marine days that the packs would sit high on my back and the belt would hit around my kidney's. Worked like a charm. Bought it from an online surplus store for $28 with new straps and frame(and was worried that it would be a bunch of threadbare crap but it was actually pretty nice.) I took her school backpack and slid it into the ALICE pack and then tightened up the straps and she asked me if I took any books out. She said it made a huge difference. My 8 yr old son could not fit the ALICE pack properly, so I outfitted him with a small Camelback pack. From previous expeditions, I know he can hold about 15 lbs without killing himself. My 3 yr old, who is the most excited about going on a hike, is gonna be a beast. If the world dont hang it self in the next few years, I may have to have some of you help me whoop him. I got him the same type of camelback pack as my 8 yr old. I put about 10 lbs in it and walked for 1/2 mile with him in the snow and he was fine. I wish I had his energy. SO that is my plan. Thanks for listening.
