  • Mora Knives

Every since I got back into talking with others about survival all I hear is Mora Bushcraft Knives. Clue a brother in, what's so special about them? I hear they don't have a full tang but it seems everyone has at least one. Why?

Inexpensive, holds a pretty good edge, fairly durable, crappy sheath. I have 2 or 3 around the AO, in fact I have one in my get home bag. I don't think you would want to do any heavy batoning with it, but for a bushcraft knife it should do well. Mine have about 4" blades, so it wouldn't make the ideal fighting knife. Get one or two and you will find a place for them. I think for the price they are a pretty good deal.

If this is the one, I wouldn't buy it. Not only does it have no form of finger guard, the handle tapers from mid handle down to the blade, making it even more prone to slipping (especially when wet with blood) and then slicing off my own fingers.

If a knife doesn't have even a slight guard on it, I do not buy it. Not for a survival/fighting knife. Maybe for a filet knife but that is about it.
Could you imagine using that bush knife as a stabbing weapon, hitting the bad guy's ribs, forward momentum of blade stops-but fingers and hand continue the forward path and slice open on the now blade handle... :(

I haven't tried it but I have seen people use the back of the blade with a piece of flint and start a fire. I have one that I put a diffrent handle on.
Survival question. What do I need most, right now?

i have a few of the military clipper ones.
those are the OD/black ones you see online for sale at places like SG etc.

They are tough little knives for the $$ and have very good carbon steel blades that can take some punishment( i wouldnt buy the stainless ones).

Some of the reason why they are so popular is they have been around the bushcraft survival scene for a long time.It is what every book and TV show/film perosn use's.

          IMHO
if you want a sub 20$ woods knife/camp knife/survival knife they are great. If you want extras, small gifts, a fixed blade for a truck kit,ghb etc then its the knife for you.

Thanks guys. It seems like thats all I hear and I don't see what all the fuss is about. I watched a review recently too and asked the same and all i got was you don't cry when you lose it because they are cheap. I have a few (hehehe) knives so I may skip this one.
            Thanks again

Like Protus says, I have the "mil" version as well. Not much of a sheath, but good for my back-up in a GHB. Mora makes different styles and I don't care for them all. Nice extra blade for kits or gift.
