Be careful with the rodent issues. They can be a problem with the totes and definitely with the cardboard. Mylar is NO barrier for rodents.

Buckets are nice cause they stack well (with decent lids), are weatherproof and can be carried one handed- a plus in a bugout.
Unless you are storing in ammo cans, you always have a possible issue with rodents. I've had rodents chew into buckets too so they aren't a barrier to them either. I had one person on my own yahoo group who stored grains in gallon glass jars. She stored them in her attic crawl space (yes, i let her know that's not the best place) the mice CHEWED THROUGH the side of the glass jar to get at the grains. Pretty sure the mouse died. lol. The but fact of the matter is that mice are resourceful and persistant.

Since I store my food storage in a spare room in the house, out in the room and not locked into a closet, I don't have a lot of problem with mice. The dogs are a great deterent and are just as persistant as any rodent that's gotten in .

as for bugging out, that's a non-issue for us. I won't be bugging out. I live WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY out in the boonies. Come any problems we would be sheltering at home. If fire or zombies come and we HAVE to bug out, then the food, and other preps, would be left behind and we would only be taking our packs.

I've heard the "rodents chew through buckets" story once before on the internet, but I've never experienced it nor seen pictures.

We keep feed outside year round in buckets and barrels and have never had this problem. Where most of our bulk storage is, field mice get into really easy, still never a problem on buckets. 24 years now also..

I'm guessing folks are talking about big New York type rats or something???

Lol. I don't know how big the rodent was that dug through my buckets when it happened. I live in Oregon though, so it would have to have been a "big Oregon type rat". :D chewed about a 4 inch hole in the side of one bucket of wheat, and had started on another bucket (emptied the first 2 out of course). I figure that if they are going to do that, why spend the $$$ on the buckets.... AND I moved them INTO the house instead of the storage shed where I had them at the time. Now I live in an area where it's mostly field mice, however, the food storage is all in the house. This keeps the mice at bay because I have 3 dogs that like to kill and eat mice. I only get occasional mice in the house and they don't last long. it's almost comical because the town is surrounded by ranches and BLM/Forestry land and some of my neighbors are infested and can't get rid of them. I have seen 2 in the year and 1/2 we've lived here. Both met their demise when I made sure the dogs could get to all their hidey holes.
